Carlos Slim buys Honda team

Departing Honda's Brackley-based Formula One team has been rescued by the second-richest man in the world, according to increasingly widespread reports in the wake of Christmas.

The unofficial news was first carried at the weekend by the Italian newspaper La Stampa, which said the Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has succeeded in buying the team for a symbolic single dollar.

Slim, who controls the telecommunications giant Telmex, was among several interested parties in the Japanese manufacturer's outfit, including David Richards.

La Stampa acknowledged that the news is not official.



"But two things are certain -- the team has been saved and the drivers will be Jenson Button and rookie Bruno Senna in place of Rubens Barrichello," the Turin-published newspaper said.

It is believed Slim is prepared to fund the F1 team to the tune of a healthy $300 million per year.

The name of the thread states the purchase has been confirmed, it is certain. The content of the post indicates it's just another rumor, like posted in the other thread about Honda in 2009.

Apparently Carlos Slim has denied all reports;

The Mexican billionaire, Carlos Slim, has denied he is in talks about a possible take over for the Honda F1 team. Italian newspaper La Stampa claimed this weekend the owner of telecom firm Telmex was in the closing stages of the take over.

A statement from Telmex said: "The Telmex Team can confirm that Carlos Slim Helu has not bought the Honda F1 team nor is holding any negotiations to do so. Therefore all information related to this subject has no basis and is completely false."

Honda F1 team boss Ross Brawn confirmed by telling the Daily Telegraph: "We would love it if it were true but it's pure speculation from various members of the media. It's just been one of those rumours which has developed a life of its own."

Brawn furthermore said about the current negotiations: "There has been a huge amount of interest. It's now got to the stage where we need to filter out the serious from the not so serious. We're all hopeful that something will happen and we're anxious to turn up the wick again in the new year.

"We haven't really lost anything yet as it has still only been a few weeks. Everything is in place although we have had to turn down various programmes. We have enough funding to get us through to Melbourne and we still have a competitive package."

Only one thing would have yelled out "sensational rumour" louder, and that would have been the BILD.

As usual a few gullible people have a managed to make a mountain out of a molehill and taken largely baseless rumour as fact :P

And I'm not having a go simply at formers for once.. this is web based media getting ahead of it's self thanks to tabloid-ism.

He assumes it was always going to be a competitive package, but he had little way of knowing that then, and even less now.
