Alonso threatens to quit if ...a single engine is approved in 2010

But Renault's double world champion said: "If they approve a single engine that would be the last straw.

"It would be time to start thinking about retirement."

Well, I'm guessing no standard engine then afterall.

Without Alonso and without Ferrari the F1 would be impossible. And remember, most of the teams want to defeat the best (Ferrari), so thy will put on the Ferrari´s side, so, if you don´t have Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and BMW, for saying something:

1. Could we call "Formula 1" a categoty with 12 cars?
2. Its good for marketing a F1 without Ferrari and McLaren, FIA?

And Bernie could make another row with Mosley, because if F1 hasnt got a big marketing, he win less $$$ I think

I'm not doubting his feelings on standard engine, but I guess it's good marketing for Fernando too if he is on Ferrari' side as soon as this and the edge of his statement helps as well.

Fernando in Ferrari 2010? The bookies should be slashing the odds, IMO.

Fernando said a couple of days ago he could not imagine leaving F1 until he wins a third WC. So what do we beleive, this latest outburst, or his earlier statements? ;)

before 2001, without alonso f1 was possible?

Really? I know Williams, Tyrell... who else?

Go back to the 70's and take a look then.
it was like that for a season or two, but there was matra and brm in the early 70 and renault in late 70,

so maybe only 76 and 77 was all cosworth and two ferris

i think the point he is making is that most of the teams used off the shelf engines, with only a few having manufacturer backing.

which appart from the height of the turbo era(84,85,86,87) is true.

pre 84 (going almost right back to the start of the seventies), ford was used by 'the vast majority' of the grid

post 87, Ford engines were used by about half of the grid (ok benetton were effectivly a ford works team at this point) with judd being the other off the shelf engine of choice used by several teams(thus again making the manufacturer backed teams the minority).

the decline starts from about 91 onwards when the costs started to rise again, and a lot of the ford/judd teams disappeared

indeed, look through the 70's, and quite often there were only 3 or 4 engine manufacturers (such as [en.wikipedia.org]) up until the early 80's.

i sense a frustrated hamilton fanboy.

People are worried about their being less cars on the grid... but people forget that things change.

There have been eras when there have been way less than 18 F1 cars on the grid.

And if it does happen, either 3 car teams, or turn Grand Prix into a two class formula and open it to GP2 or F2 cars.
This is stupid. F1 should not be about standard engines. It should be about teams/ car manufactorers using their own resources in order to win. Its going downhill..MotoGP seems more exciting now.

MotoGP has been more exciting race action wise for the past two years.

BTCC has been more exciting for a few seasons longer than that.

It's only after we've lost everything, that we are free to do anything.

Maybe, but nevertheless i still love F1. Id still watch it whatever the rules, I just think that teams should not share engines/parts.
