Australian Formula One racer Mark Webber has been seriously injured after being hit by a car while competing in his multisport challenge in Tasmania.

Webber, who drives for F1's Red Bull team, was cycling along Fortesque Bay Road, near Port Arthur on the Tasman peninsula, when he and a Nissan X-Trail vehicle collided, Tasmania Police Sergeant Jon Ford told AAP.

Sgt Ford said Webber was competing in his own charity event, the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge, a 250km challenge using mountain bikes, kayaks and trekking, when the accident happened, around 12.40pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

"As a result of the collision, the rider, Mark Webber, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries,'' Sgt Ford said.

"He was attended at the scene by paramedics attached to the event before being airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital.''

Sgt Ford said the event was being raced on open public roads and it was not known whether the stage along Fortesque Bay Road was cordoned off specifically for the racers.

The male driver of the Nissan X-trail escaped injury but no further details were known about the motorist, he added.

Webber was competing on the penultimate day of the five-day challenge, which also includes abseiling and whitewater rafting.

hope he's okay!

ooho return of DC now that would be nice. rumour has it webbers been pinned in his leg (ouch, my brother has a telescopic titanium rod in his upper part of his leg, grows with the femur as he had it inserted aged 8, and that was a nightmare to recover from!). Hopefully webbo will be ok!

There's every chance he'll be driving fit for Melbourne. But his testing will be minimal, and that's significant because of the larger change in regulations this year.

I swear to God that I had Webber in my dream last night. I just voke up, went to sleep some 7-8 hours ago.
And in dream it was start of season 2009, Monza was first race of the season for some reason, last seconds of wet qualifications, Massa on pole and then Webber comes and takes the pole in last second.
And someone after that tells to Webber: "that was world class, really great...".

And I just turned on PC and I see this :(

And please without "Massa on wet pole, it was definetly a dream" joke...

Sad to hear about this, hope Mark will be fine.
4 months still till Melbourne, so he should be fit in plenty of time.
This challenge he imposes on himself in Tasmania is quite extreme though, maybe he should go easier on himself in future. It's not worth compromising his health for.

Perhaps...perhaps not, but it's a charity event to which he puts a lot into. I think he's right to do so.

It's also an accident. I bet many of us cycle on public roads, but I doubt many get mown down and end up on our backs in hospital with a broken leg.

Still, it must be a clean break if he's sidelined for a min of 6 weeks, so hopefully it's all routine from now onwards. He should get enough of pre-season to get to grips with the new regulations.

Webber will be fine, that injury demands 6 weeks of recovery, I had something similar

thank god it's only 1 broken leg and not much more, when i first heard this news at about half 7 at work this morning, they said he had broken his legs and arms, meaning all 4 limbs.
he should easily be fine for January testing, if not he'll be ready for Melbourne anyway.

and as Gav said, it's not the challenge that's injured him, he's done it for a few years now, it was just an accident that could have happened to any one of the participants, but just coincidently happened to the main guy.

RIP Jules, never to be forgotten. #KeepFightingMichael
