Apparently 2009 is widely expected to be the last time we go to Magny-Cours, whether it's a candidate on Oct 15 or not. The FIA are expected to choose a different track for future French GPs :)

well that's a relief! i know there is a 'Magny-Cours 2' proposal, but as you say, hopefully the FIA chooses another track.

here is McNish's 2002 Suzuka crash, as discussed at the bottom of the last page

" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350">

that crash shouldn't necessarily have led to them re-profiling the corner. they needed some better barriers (they could have used SAFER barriers nowadays) and a bit of a astroturf or tarmac strip next to the kerb.

We've also lost the old kerb-climing chicane, which has been replaced by a bog-standard right-left.

Disagree Bruninho. I'm not a fan of long straights for the sake of long straights, but Hockenheim and Monza were special in the V10 and V12 era, with the cars dancing along all over the track at ridiculous speeds aiming at a tiny window for braking and turn in. I think the old Hockenheim was one of the best circuits on the calendar, as it and Monza provided unique challenges and danger*, which gave it a sort of tension and atmosphere completely devoid on most current F1 tracks.

* not saying danger is good, but you know what I mean.

The old Hockenheim always provided good races. There was great slipstreaming, and because the cars were under great stress at top speed they failed more often, usually spectacularly. So yeah, Hockenheim had a unique character. I always used to look forward to it - there was something electrifying about watching the cars at 210+ mph. Now the German GP is just another race.

by what i read there will be also changes in Interlagos this year, however not sure in what extent this will affect ( maybe just in boxes , or improvements in structure)but opefully not in track itself

Yeah, they defo needed some better barriers at 130R. The way the car punched its way through there was scary as hell. Think Martin described the barrier as "looking like a can after the opener had been used on it" in his commentary.

gav, i do understand your point about old hockenheim but imo the old track had too many long straights, 1 was enough for me. Just realized that after shanghai and fuji and I had accepted new hockenheim better.

Rettifilio @ Monza?

No, the final chicane at Suzuka (I think).

Ah yeah, that'd make more sense. The chicane at Suzuka the last few years was nowhere near as challenging. Plus the really long pit entrance that once helped characterise Suzuka is gone as well

Have they said why they dropped it? I just dont see the reason for it.

As far as I know, the main reason for the GP changing circuits was Toyota. Ever since they'd been in F1 they'd wanted the race to move to Fuji - and they had the funds to help make it happen...
I remember when the news of the move to Fuji broke round about the time of the 2006 Japanese GP, the two Toyota drivers were 'delighted' that the race was moving to Fuji and all the other drivers ITV interviewed were p****d off. It was priceless, from the point of view of the blatant PR from Ralf and Jarno!

Maybe because of the tarmac issues this year (can't imagine that really btw, but it's the only thing I can think of).

Bloody, bloody shame. I liked the circuit and the races, mostly they were quite enjoyable!

"Japan and China should move to the middle of the season (where Canada/USA used to be), because in their current position, they are subject to the monsoon season, like Fuji in 2007, Suzuka in 2004 and Shanghai in 2006 and 2007."

All the more reason to keep them there - wet races are good.

But I'm not happy at all that Montreal is gone. Kicks up an amazing race each year, it's just ridiculous. The FIA have completely lost the plot in recent years, it's all about the money now. I don't see how they can replace somewhere like that which has amazing races with somewhere @#$%& like Bahrain or Malaysia which is yet to have an interesting race, ever. I think it's time for Max and Bernie to step down, they're too old and have no clue what they're doing.

Put ME in charge, I say. Then you could have Paul Ricard, Montreal, Imola and any other proper track you liked and not these "jewels in the desert", in which the racing is as dry and barren as the sand they're knocked up on. Oh yeah and you could have Tilke in a noose.

Think he meant Montreal. ;-)

And yes, I did mean the chicane at Suzuka, but the Monza one applies equally, though at least the 2nd chicane still has some decent kerbs on it.

[uk.eurosport.yahoo.com]

No significant changes to the layout, just new pit straight, grandstands and media/corporate facilities

What a shame, ony of my fav tracks, and certainly an all time favorite of mine in GP4.
Slovenian Pop TV report said that it had to do with teams wanting the summer break.
So i guess they decided Montreal was the easiest to miss??
