Suggesting that the Spa layout is too long for F1 is complete bollocks... if you need an answer to that notion look no further than Valencia's brand new street layout which lo and behold is one of the longest laps in F1.

I'd side witb Dave on this one... the rumour as it stands at this time, trusted source or not does not seem to have a great deal of substance.

They would be utterly mad to get rid of pouhon, fanges, blanchimont etc.

Its on other sites now as well.

tbh if they make these changes they may as well go to a different track, the long run off have taken away some of the challenge anyway but these new changes take away some of the best corners.

Drivers and fans love Spa for its layout and location as its so different from anything else. I do hope they dont change it.

If is this truth than F1 going in completely opposite direction than should be.
With all new things that happen about F1, I'm not surprised by every new proposal or rule.
Spa is DEFINITELY one of the best circuits in the world if not the best (yeah, I know,...legendary Nordschleife ;) )
They (FIA) already killed or ruined some legendary tracks or some corners, like last modifications on Spa, ...
Another example in new Valencia street track. On first look it may look, nice and fast (which it is) but it is uninteresting and almoust impossible for overtaking and it is to loon which mean too boring (race was prove of that).
I dont know what will be Singapore but on experience in last few years I think that modern F1 (not all) track have lack excitement!

They did a same sort of thing with the Assen TT circuit in Holland (From the MotoGP), also a long and fast classic circuit. The MotoGP bosses (dunno what their organisation is called) cut most of the corners. Both fans and driver's were totally dispointed, but that doesn't seem to matter anymore. After all, motorsports aren't their for fans and driver's, but to make money ofcourse.

Now we wait till the re-open the oval at monza ;)

at least they said that current track will remain but not for F1. It could be much worse, they could plant trees over that section, just like they did in hockenheim. And there are much talkings that they will tear down the old monza banking, which would be a great loss...

That has been rumoured for ice ages. They're not going to do it, they'd get lynched.

As for the Spa "official" denial, it's hardly a coherent response, but to be fair, you ask any sensible person if pouhon, fanges, stvelot and blanchimont are going to be raped and they would commit you to a mental institution.

Personally I think they've enough tinkering to Spa in the name of F1, they have to clear a lot of trees already, which has taken a bit of the character away, but at least the main essence of the layout always remained.

If the layout does change, it will be one big mistake.

They have changed the following circuits and ruined them (I think):

Suzuka: Cool 130R replaced with an easy flat kink

Hockenheim: Long straights replaced by Tilke's Tedious Turns

Imola: Tamburello, Variante Alta and Villeneuve corners replaced with chicanes

Fuji: Challenging high speed layout replaced with hairpins and chicanes

Osterreichring: Fastest circuit ever replaced with point and squirt A1 Ring

Barcelona: Attempt at making the circuit have passing chances by removing the final 2 fast corners an epic fail

Mexico City: Peralta elimated

Nurburgring: Well, it had to happen. But the Castrol-S was changed into that really slow crap.

Spa: 14km circuit changed into challenging 7km layout. But is that soon to be changed..............?

Sums it up nicely. However I do like some cornercombinations from new circuits like Turkey and Bahrain, so it's not all bad.

Mexico City: Peralta elimated

Peraltada is still there, and in use, its just no longer banked. Champ Car was just too scared to use it.

Yeah but they've also put a wall on the outside, so in theory does that make it more dangerous???

It's no more dangerous than them doing 230mph on ovals, it just needs a SAFER barrier. Champcar probably couldn't trust the drivers to take it correctly, it being a right-handed banked corner....

They won't do the changes to Spa because it'd cost too much and ruin the circuit. Between Pouhon and Blanchimont is valley and forest, and that costs a lot of money to make safe.

Potentially, but it's more of a known quantity, and far more predictable than the old gravel trap with tyre wall. Think of how many big accidents were exacerbated by tyre walls in fast corners. There's a reason few ovals adopted tyre walls permanently.

Personally I can't stand the new Peraltada. It's just become a long corner now. It used to be almost unique among road racing circuits. Not to say I don't agree with what they did, and at least they attempted to keep as much of the core of the old one as was realistic, but I still can't stand that replacement.

Why change the Spa layout to something so poor? You might as well scrap Zolder and re-create that section of Spa in its place. No point in ruining a perfectly good circuit IMHO. I'd much rather not have a race at Spa than see it torn apart.

P.S. 130R has been replaced at Suzuka?? :O Have I completely missed this...?
