DC Announces his retirement

The strong rumour in the days before the British Grand Prix is that David Coulthard will announce his retirement from Formula One this weekend at Silverstone.

The veteran of approaching 250 Grand Prix, 15 consecutive seasons and 13 wins - and at 37 the oldest active race driver - is out of contract at Red Bull at the end of the season.

With German youngster Sebastian Vettel expected to claim his seat for next year, it is now strongly speculated that Coulthard will take the opportunity of perhaps his last home race to signal the impending end of his F1 career.

He said recently about the prospect of retirement as a race driver: "When that moment comes, there you go.
That's the journey of life. You move on to the next thing.

"There are a lot worse things that can happen to you and you move on to the next challenge," Coulthard added.

it appears unlikely that he will hold his seat at red bull, so i suppose it is a good idea for him to announce it himself and move on rather than holding onto false belief, and then being sacked (ralf ;))

Good luck to him whatever he does. I also think he will retire even though he still has alot to give and next year RBR will miss his experience in developing the car.

I personally think Vettel should get out of the RBR group and get with a top team.

Well if it happens it wont be a bad thing, im sure he will move on to other things.

I for one woud LOVE to see DC in an FIA posistion or something of the sort within F1.

His experience within the sport shows everytime he speaks, he knows alot and I think would know alot about how to sort the sport out.

He may do commentating on the BBC or something similar.

Think its the right time for him, some os his perfomances this year have been poor, with Webber comfortably the team's No.1.

Maybe he could move into a testing role with RBR.

I would be very sad to see him go - never liked him too much while he drove for McLaren, but since joining RBR he's my favourite F1 driver. However, I so agree to what Chet said - out of the active drivers, there are only very few that seem to be capable of anything else than driving their cars, let alone bother about the sport as long as they get their money paid out. Quite the contrary with DC, and that's why I like him so much.

Hes one of the last drivers to be in F1 when Senna died. It will be sad to see him go, but its his choice to go.

His career has wained in the last few years but his 3rd in Canada shows he still has it in him.

Well, DC has to go sooner or later. I do believe he got as much out of the Red Bull as it has been able to give, though Webber has done better this season.

I started following DC when I first became a F1 fan. First Schumi, now maybe DC.

Guess I'll have to back Jarno once DC gives it up, as I'm not to keen on the younger F1 drivers so far...

I thought DC was gone when his McLaren contract was up, but he's been outstanding for Red Bull since going there (remember his first race for them at Melbourne, and then in Monaco the following year). It was a new lease of life and he's earned back my respect after being bludgeoned by Kimi in 2004. He's done well with it but I can understand if he chooses to retire now. Age is against him, amongst other things. The quality's still there, but it's become a little rough round the edges this year.

He's still got the raw pace and ability, as he's shown countless times, but ever since they started playing around with qualifying formats, he's struggled to stay where he otherwise would still be.

He'll make a good media guy. If Brundle doesn't move across to the Beeb, then DC should be a no-brainer for his role. He's got the same say-what-you-see attitude that works really well in a supporting role.

Not quite; DC's promotion to be a race driver at Williams was a direct result of the loss of Ayrton. His first race was the Spanish GP on May 29, 1994. But it's true his 3rd place in Canada was a great result, and shows he's still a strong race driver.

It'd be great if he became a commentator when he retires, he has the knowledge about F1, tells it as it is and has a great sense of humour ;)

He was William's test driver. His entry into racing was a result of Senna's tragic death.
