An official announcement that Ron Dennis is stepping down as boss of the Formula One team McLaren-Mercedes will be made in the middle of this week, an authoritative British newspaper claims.

Citing 'sources', the Sunday Times - which last week received a private briefing from the 60-year-old Briton rejecting rumours that he is being pushed out of the role - now reports that Dennis 'is determined to achieve a better balance between his family life, other McLaren businesses and the Grand Prix team.'

The report floated the possibility that current deputy Martin Whitmarsh will take control of the team 'a few races into the season.'

Sir Frank Williams, one of Dennis' contemporaries and traditionally an ally, observed to the Daily Mail: "Ron seems to have been submerged, sadly."

Now, that was half expected/half unexpected

Having a bad year Ron is.... as dull as he may be he has taken McLaren through some of its best years so it would be a shame to see him go.

I hope not!
Though if this is to sort out family issues, ie with the wife, then yeah it has to be done, but I hope just isnt stepping down after whats happened with the whole spygate thing :(

Great! Been waiting some years for this. Can be only positive for the team and future of F1 what comes to getting agreement from all teams for any positive rule changes. :)

Kimi, so, Massa Fernando Sebastian is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood that message?

"Ron Dennis Is OUT"

really? I never saw him as a homosexual.

can't say i'm bothered, wouldn't trust him as far as i can throw him.

but i suppose it's a shame a figure of his stature in the sport in gone.

only Frank Williams is left of the "old guard" now i think.

Too bad. As Muks said, it's a shame to lose him.

Will be a great shame to see him go. As Frank Williams said in the Daily Mail this week he is the only one brave enough to stand up to Max Mosley. The only people who will be dining out on this is Mr Mosley and a few Ferrari fanboys.

A loss to the sport.

He's out? He's apparently stepping aside, but certainly isn't out.

Supposedly he said last week that before 'Ferrarigate' or 'spygate' or whatever you want to call it, he was intending to step down last October. Until this has some substance I'm just going to assume that the plan has just been delayed, probably until the end of the 2008 season.

His life outside of F1 is falling apart though, so it would hardly be a surprise.

I think its a shame tbh I also think next year will be the last we see the name mclaren it will become merc.

When people say Rons name I automaitcally think of ron ever since I started watching f1 he was a huge part of it, willing to take risks as well with the way his team went to car build etc.

Martin though is very prepared and i think the transition will be seemless.

I just hope the media and other people are happy now, no doubt people will say he was responsible for the ferrari stuff and thats why he is stepping down.

very odd if i'd invested so much in hamiltons career i'd stick around until he won a championship, i feel sorry for the guy.

Sometimes in this game when you're dealt a hand of absolutely crap cards, you've no option but to fold. :( Ron is one of the best businessmen in Formula 1. We've seen so many other teams lose performance and then flounder around sacking people in a desperate attempt to get their edge back... but when that happened to McLaren, Ron kept his head down and hauled them back up. One of my clearest memories of watching F1 was that first race of 1998, when McLaren finished 1-2 and lapped the entire field! In modern day F1, that's virtually unheard of! Nobody but Ron, not even Ferrari, could manage that.

Ron hasn't invested much as such, McLaren have (of which Dennis owns a part). How successful Hamilton is is in the company's interest, not Ron's.

Locke, have you seen anything of the 80's and 90's? :P

It will be a real loss to the sport. Though I like Mercedes, I don't want McLaren to be Mercedes. McLaren is a great name and Merc should be proud of that name instead of changing it.

Best thing in the world for McLaren F1. Ron's time is long since past, and the team needs a fresh perspective, whether it comes from the Mercedes hierarchy
or elsewhere...

Even if he does step aside, it'll be Whitmarsh who takes over as CEO, a man who recieved top honours at the Ron Dennis school of business management.

being a Williams fan i've always considered Mclaren as the enemy

however i don't know about you guys but i think it'd be a sad day if he goes.

F1 has changed so much in recent years and not always for the better.

as some one pointed out, that'll only leave Frank and Patrick left from the old guard.

Ken Tyrrell, Eddie Jordan, Jackie Oliver,Giancarlo Minardi all forced to sell up.

what happens next? Mercedes buying out mclaren?

we've already lost, Lotus, Ligier(i can't bring myself to call them Prost), March,Arrows, Tyrell, Brabham and more recently Benetton, Jordan and Minardi.
to lose another name, especially one as steeped in history and who's contributed hugely to F1 over the years as Mclaren and then have it replaced with another faceless corporate brand would be a crying shame.

For those happy to see the back of him i think its a case of being careful what you wish for you just might get it.

BMW, Toyota, Honda, Renault, they've all come and gone when it suited them before and they will do it again.

However the Ron Dennis' and Frank Williams' of this world are racers through and through. They will still be here no matter what.

Formula 1 needs more people like them, not less.
