From BBC Sport:

Italian Giorgio Pantano is set to land a drive at Jordan, leaving British drivers Ralph Firman and Allan McNish without a race seat in Formula One.
BBC Radio Five Live has said that Jordan are close to concluding a deal with Pantano for the only remaining seat on the 2004 grid.

Pantano, runner-up in Formula 3000 in 2002, would partner Nick Heidfeld.

Jordan were in talks with experienced Dutchman Jos Verstappen but these finally broke down on Friday.

Pantano, 24, who won the German Formua Three title in 2000, tested for the Williams F1 team in November 2002.

Didnt see that coming!

Due to the voting system in Germany, Governments are always made up of coalitions of different parties. At the last election, an almost unprecidented result saw the CDU/CSU (rough equivilant of the Conservatives) go into Government with the SPD (rough equivilant of Labour)

i always liked Pantano in F3000, but i'd still prefer the seat to go to a Brit.

good luck to him if he does get it tho, i think he deserves it.

Excellent news in my opinion, obviously not for the Brits :( BUT F3000 is so often overlooked, and it produces some great drivers.

Pantano is one of my personal favourites from F3000, so I'm delighted he's got a drive, if this story proves to be true.

I think it was Sperafico.;-)

Anyway Pantano is one of the best non-F1 drivers in the world. He deserves the seat as much as anyone.

Everything in the past is better than today. It's true,I read it on the internet.

@ andrew_s

More often than not, the best F3000 drivers never end up in F1 (e.g. Jorg Muller, Bruno Junquiera, Sebastien Bourdais, Darren Manning, Gil de Ferran...) but people often forget where some of today's stars made their mark:

Juan Pablo Montoya
Olivier Panis
Justin Wilson
Fernando Alonso
Nick Heidfeld
Mark Webber
Ralf Schumacher

...to name but a few :)

Now I realize mixed up his name with Marco Pantani, the Tours de France winner of 1998. News just came in that Pantani has obvioulsy killed himself. :-o Sad story - obvioulsy he wanted too much. This whole doping affair and the loss of reputation after he had been treated like a hero after his Tours victory, obvioulsy drove him into depressions. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it looks like suicide.

'The autopsy has finished but it is only the first of a long series of investigations. Samples taken today will be analysed to evaluate and complete the investigations," Fortuni told reporters.

"They are complex and only at the end will we be able to respond with certainty to what the judge has asked us to report on -- the cause of death," he added.

Asked whether the death of Pantani could be linked to a possible cocktail of drugs, Fortuni replied: "There is no sign of that"

Two elements have emerged -- bleeding in the brain and lungs. At this point, we can exclude violence. The investigations will last several weeks."

I would agree with Oleg.

So what he has bought the drive he does have the skill to go with it

He has bought the drive, but he is good. He has done well in previous F1 tests and F3000. He was German F3 champion too.:)

He is good for Jordan, a mix of talent and money. Tbh I think he was the best they could get for what they needed.

I see him as a Christian Klien - a good young talent in F1 on money, but who has had the chance to prove himself a little more before moving to F1
