Remember back in the day, the turbo engines didn't need the airbox. Only the naturally aspirated, though in the early days of the Cosworth DFV, the engines were exposed.

"the turbo engines didn't need the airbox"

What they did need was big radiators and had two air scoops on both side pods to get more air into the turbos.
There have been many F1 cars without airboxes iirc they were banned in 1976 because the designers where making them huge and they could be dangerous if they flew off in an accident, i think they made a comeback in 1987 on the normally aspirated cars.

I remember reading about the car in a magazine. It was a Lola test car in 1995/6(?) preceeding there 1997 entry into F1. No idea about the lack of airbox though

A Lola test car? It might be, but I don't think it was for their entry of 1997. They intended to enter in 1998 so they could test in 1997, but Mastercard didn't want to wait that long. So Lola entered in 1997, but they had hardly tested, hence why they sucked.

they turned up at Melbourne '97, but the cars never left the garage, IIRC.

Had test cars in 95 and 96 get ready for an entry into 98.

Mastercard dropped the bombshell in the winter of 96 that they wanted them on the grid in 97 or they would pull the plug which gave them next to no time to come up with a car for Melbourne.

Turned up and were about 10 seconds off the pace, even encountering ludicrous design flaws such as wing stalling. Never made proper qualifying and Mastercard pulled the plug before they got to Brazil.

I believe that the 95 car with no airbox was basically the car they used in 97. Hence why it was so crap and off the pace.

It probably had an old DFV engine from the early 80s (which were often left open). :P
