Williams – the Real deal!
According to Spanish newspaper AS, Williams are the hot favourites to land the much publicised sponsorship deal with footballing legends Real Madrid.
In an innovative arrangement, the soccer giants hope to see the Williams-Toyotas carrying their team colours at next year’s Spanish Grand Prix.
As part of the contract it is rumoured that ‘Galactico’ David Beckham will demonstrate his skills behind the wheel of one of Sir Frank’s cars with a few laps of the Catalunya circuit before qualifying, while Williams new boy Alexander Wurz draws the short straw by having to turn out for the Madrid reserves on Sunday morning.
For Williams, the deal is all part of reinvigorating the squad after a dire 2006.
As for Real, quite what a football club gets out of sponsoring an F1 team for just one race is not exactly clear – if it is just a way to annoy arch-rivals Barcelona on their home turf, then there must surely be a cheaper way of doing it…
