why would it be 0 for Renault? that would only happen if Alonso retired, because he would take the 1 with him into retirement. but he moved teams so he takes the 1 with him to McLaren.

if MS had won, then Massa and Kimi would have been 0 and 2, but that didn't happen.

are you sure?

when was this rule brought in?

surely it's better to keep changing numbers so the fans have to keep buying the latest hats with the new number on it?

i'm sure you're wrong about this, the numbers DO change every year depending on the constructors championship, once the drivers champion and his teammate take 1 and 2.

McLaren - 1 & 2
Renault - 3 & 4
Ferrari - 5 & 6
Honda - 7 & 8
BMW Sauber - 9 & 10
Toyota - 11 & 12
Red Bull - 14 & 15
Williams - 16 & 17
Toro Rosso - 18 & 19
Spyker MF1 - 20 & 21
Super Aguri - 22 & 23

Does that help at all?

2004 - McLaren 5 & 6
2005 - McLaren 9 & 10
2006 - McLaren 3 & 4

There, that'll help.

They tried to implement this rule about just changing the numbers of the WDC team and the team that had the number 1, two years ago, but all teams didn't accepted it. The teams that had higher numbers wanted to have their numbers lower to show their sponsors that thay are improving. So all teams voted against this rule.

I think the numbers should be like they were on 80's with Ferrari beeing 27 - 28, Lotus 11 - 12 (ok, I know Lotus isn't racing anymore), McLaren 7-8, Williams 5 - 6 (with the 5 beeing red in the front of the car)...

Just gives the #1 to the WDC and his team-mate gets #2, the others should have a static number...

nah, the current system is much more logical. what would be the point of having a random numbering system?

a team that was 14 and 15 who have now improved would want to have a lower number for advertising purposes, it wouldn't be fair to make them stick to 14 and 15 forever.

And everybody would fight for the lowest number possible.

Yes, because that's why the teams spend millions every year: to have a low number.

I prefered the random numbering. Summat about seeing a No.5 Williams or a No.27 Ferrari that just stirs the blood

D'oh, I was misinformed about BMW and Super Aguri :) Should check my sources...

Yes, NeoLiot's numbering is in fact correct then.

how has this thread got more than 1 page?!

why can't people understand? i mean it happens every year..... last year's champion gets number 1 (and his team mate number 2), everyone else goes by order of constructors championship.

confused at people's confusion...

Nahh the random numbering is flawed, the famous 27 & 28 Ferrari's were actually Williams' original numbers. The old numbering system made it posible to lose your numbers forever. I did a quick working out of what the numbers would be like today if the system had never changed for '96:

This is for the 2006 line-up, not 2007!
Renault - 1 & 2
Honda - 3 & 4
Super Aguri - 5 & 6
Williams - 7 & 8
McLaren - 9 & 10
Red Bull - 11 & 12
Midland - 14 & 15
Toyota - 16 & 17
Toro Rosso - 23 & 24
Ferrari - 27 & 28
BMW Sauber - 29 & 30

Coincidentally this season would have become the first time since 1995 that the Ferrari's ran with 27 & 28. I also based new teams' numbers on the premise that they would fill the first vacant 'slot'.
