Gui was being funny.

leaving his pitbox after a stop, Alesi caught his right-hand x-wing on the air lines from another team, and it ripped off from his sidepod.

yes they were banned for being ugly, but also in case they fell off and hurt someone.

yes, those are the wings (called x wings or tower wings).

Tyrell had them in '97 for the high downforce circuits, then Sauber, Ferrari and Jordan also had them in '98.

I'm sure they took one side off because it interfered with refuelling, I'll have a look for some photos.

maybe. or maybe it broke off while racing or in a pitstop. surely having it only on 1 side will do more harm than good for the aerodynamics?

and the Arrows from practice at Monaco '01:

and Jordan had a special wing for Monaco practice also, but it was more of a T shape. can't find any good pics of it.

Ack...I mean no problem in trying to get the car as fast as possible, but you have to mantain a minimal sense of design on the thing :p

Holy crap that "wing on a pylon" mounted in front of the cockpit on the Jordan looks like an accident waiting to happen! I bet Jarno wasn't very pleased with that one....
