Exactly. Ilmor actually does the Mclaren engines and they are badged Mercedes. So if Red Bull buys Cosworth, then although Cosworth will build the engine, it will be badged as Red Bull. And Red Bull apparently has the money to ensure continued engine developement with their own in house motor department...

Ilmor was sold to Mercedes. ;) Mercedes makes the engines from the end of the last season. Also Mario Illien isnt in the buisness anymore...

Who was it on this forum who predicted that Toyota would try and get an engine deal with Williams to give themselves more political voting power? :) Whoever it was seems to be spot on there.

It was bandied around last year, when the Williams BMW marriage was over. Williams would take 1 year with Cosworth, then look to get a new manufacturer, which was most likely to be Toyota.
Low and behold, it has come true...

As said above, it's a 3 year deal, and the engines will be badged as Lexus. This allows Williams to attract some more sponsors, and gives Toyota some assistance in developing the engines, as they will be using the same ones. I've read that it is techincially a "free deal", in that no money is involved. [www.grandprix.com]

The only problem is that Toyota are giving themselves a rod for their back, coz if Williams win a race before Toyota do, heads will roll...literally.

Just coming back on a few points.
"Could this be a stepping stone for Toyota to pull out of F1? "
Yes. Especially............
"If they continue to flop, and Williams shine with their engines."

Don't know about winning but Williams have had a great slow track chassis for two seasons. What they have lacked is grunt from a strong engine. As I see it the BMW and the Cosworth engines have had the bhp there in a very narrow range. I do see the possibility of Toyota ducking out of their massive F1 liability but its also possible that the rod will be on the F1 team's back. All in all I'd say that Toyota management would be quite happy for Williams to do well with their engines. Either Cologne shapes up or they are all out of work and Williams effectively becomes the Toyota works team. It all comes down to WIlliams being allowed to beat the carp out of Toyota whoever is winning races.

"shows how bad it is williams are using the same engines this weekend they used at monaco"

I thought that at first but it may be a good tactic. It is cost effective to run them on as they have only done low mileage and have had the benefit of allowed repairs. That will mean Williams can take new engines to Canada and hopefully not have to ship out new ones again for USA. No one ever accused FW of wasting money.

The other tradition of Williams is that they build cars any idiot can win in. That may no longer be true but the idea that cars are more important than drivers is sound business. If you have the car, drivers will queue up to get in it at whatever salary.

I wouldn't put it quite like that, with the amount of people interested in entering F1, it's quite possible that someone will buy the Toyota team if they pull out, people will still have their jobs, they just won't be donning the red and white anymore.

Precisly.

Williams are a much better team, with less money and showing up TF with the same engines is like RBR beating Ferrari. Its the same.

I cant see TF putting themselves in a posistion where they supply a team who is better than them :P

Eh... thanks for poinitng that out. I should have said Ilmor previously made the engines for Macca and they were badged Mercedes.

I guess that shows how closely I follow McLaren these days...
