Woah! :O ...I just hope the FIA increases the amount of team slots slightly, to make for better viewing. I think that small, private teams would add a lot to the current grid mainly made up of manufacturers.

they should allow 40 cars to do the pre-qualifys with last 14 droping out so that we would have 26 cars on start like in mid 90s

Williams, Mclaren, Toyota etc signed up to F1 for 2008 last week. The applicants include the current 11 teams, and Dave Richards Pro Drive outfit and Paul Stoddarts Minardi.

And anze, pre-qualify didnt work like that ;-)

wasnt pre qualifying the "crappest"/"worst performing" teams having a shootout to actually qualify for qualifying itself?

yeah, so not all the team would have to take part in pre-qualifying, just say the lowest 8 if there were 22 teams, of which maybe 5 or 6 would fail to qualify for qualifying.

Astonishing number of applicants! I think it would be safe to assume the current teams would be guarenteed a place on the grid, leaving only one new slot for the other 11 applicants. I think it should be increased though. Perhaps to 14 teams... 28 cars. Is that pushing it?! Most circuits could easily handle that amount.

I would LOVE to see a return to qualifying when cars could fail to qualify, adds something to the tail end of the field

garage room for a lot of extra teams

I'd really like to see 26 car grids again, preferably bigger. The problem is that the pits have all been adapted since we last had that many cars :(

I remember that in 2002 we almost had a 26 car grid because there were already 24 cars from 2001 and Toyota were making their debut.

All of the track owners were told they had to have pit facilities for 26 cars. These days all of the garages are still used, but the highest teams get 3 slots rather than 2.

In 02 there were 22 cars. Only Prost died so it stayed 22.

A bit of a catch 22.

More teams, but then more shite teams. More like Aguri etc...

Less teams more competitive teams.

So would you rather see a grid of 20 cars at a competitve pace, or 26 at varying pace?

thats because renault currently occupy something in the region of 5 garages...;)

i wonder how many of those teams are credible propositions though. certainly you'd have to say prodrive and stoddart have a fair level of credibility, but how many outfits have just signed up as a sort of 'yahoo!' proposal?

however, it'd be nice to see a sort of prequalifying session. perhaps you could set up a qualifying session for the small teams at silverstone or somewhere in the week before the grand prix. they can fight it out for the last few grid spaces. make an event out of it, bring in a crowd, perhaps some support races...all that sort of thing. good chance for the event to generate some revenue which could be used as a 'fighting fund' for the minor teams, or it could be put back into the circuit coffers. hell, im sure the BRDC would love some extra cash as well as promotional opportunities! c'mon, lets make it happen!
