Does anyone think that F1 lacks personality?

Right now, I think that the lack of character in the sport is making it less enjoyable than it could be. There seems to be a lot less passion, too. We need more drivers willing to take risks, more teams willing to try something radical, more people willing not to race conservatively due to chances they may have, and more outgoing drivers...

Anybody else agree?

shame Sdotard is gone, I liked the way he said what he thought and spoke out about the things that go "behind the scenes" that no other team managers talked about..
Montoya and JV are a bit like that I fink

commercialism and legislation is increasingly stifling the sport. drivers cant say anything even slightly controversial for fear that they may upset a sponsor or other dignitary. due to legislation and the fear of law-suits, the sport is becoming too sanitised. thats part of the reason why we have to suffer boring tilke-dromes...

Yes, i read a quote a while ago from a Minardi engineer who said something like there is more money in F1 now but fewer smiles, Red_Bulls post sums it up really.

how can you say f1 has no personality, when it has midlandF1?! ;)

(blatant sarcasm btw in case anyone doesn't notice it)

altho i wouldn't like f1 to go too far the american way, it still needs to appear professional.

Ermm lol, in a sence F1 is still a 'gentlemans sport' :P donuts would go right with the image of F1 either lol.

And plus... Sato's on the grid, so im sure we will get some ;)

Red_Bull put it perfectly, F1 is becoming more business and less sport.

Problem is that cars will be heading towards him when he does :O

F1 became a business when tobacco sponsership came in. Wasnt it 1967/8? With the Lotus?

hmm, not really, it became very dry when you had to toe the coperate line and when the rules lacked the ability to be creative. Its something thats gradually happened over time, but for me, especially in the last 7 or 8 years.

Just because the sponsorship came in at that time does not mean F1 became "business" like at that time. Anyone that knows what Grand Prix racing was like in the 70s will know that, the colour, diversity and characters didnt fade when lotus signed up with Imperial tobacco (i think that was the parent co.) in 68. Money coming in doesnt really mean business like, Chapman was famously cavaleir (and not business like, as you put it) with his and Group lotuses Millions, hence the De Lorean affair. Very much in contrast to your assumption there. The money was coming in and it was just spent, the balance sheet and shareholders were off little concideration.

Bring Eddie Jordan back. A Guitar-playing rock'n'roller running a F1 team is what we need and I don't see Frank or Ron juming on stage for a quick "Johnnie B Goode", And yes, I did pick the two most charismatic bosses we have.

Nico bites yer tyres!

Don't you think Frank was a bit of a bad example?
Well I agree with much of the earlier said. There is too much control by the Sponsors, manufacturers and the FIA about Bullshit. Drivers get their statements before they even have to think what they might wanna say. Critisism is something considered a bad thing, although it´s the essence of development. I just remember some statement from Red Bull (whose artificial WILD AND COOL image is annoying me anyway) that the drivers may say whatever they like, cause Red Bull is unlike the big manufacturers ... unless the driver won´t say anything critical or bad about the team, the sponsor or the crew. Well HELLOOOO Red Bull, what is the dirfference about any other team then, huh?

But all in all it´s a general problem of society, not Formula One.

Surely I would like a driver to say *HEY I @#$%& UP MY TIRES* like senna did once, or Two drivers mistaking the pits for a boxing arena (like Spa 98), or just a driver that admits the fact that his car is a piece of junk. The only positive thing in a long time was a refreshing interview with Nico Rosberg at Bahrain, but I bet that he will be turned into just another mindless Robot before the end of the season.

Jaques Villeneuve used to be an out forward critic as well when he came to F1...and what happened when he told about his thoughts over rule changes? YEAH, you got it! The FIA *invited* him to Paris to get him back *in line*. What a bunch of crap that business stuff has become.

Well put, I remember Marcus Gronholm giving his new Peugeot 307 WRC car a great deal of critisism in it's first year, even saying "I am fed up with this car." and the result? Peugeot gave him a race winning car the next year. My point is that drivers should be honest about how they feel, because that is the only way that anyone will know where they stand with regards to development.

As for the "HEY I @#$%& UP MY TIRES" comment, I really thought that Montoya would be the one to do things like that but even he has gone into his shell a bit. You can see dangermouseaix's point in the post race press conferences, no matter how the question is worded, the drivers will say almost the same thing every race, although they say it differently.

well said dangermouse.
no one has any personality in f1. liuzzi seems ok, but even with rbr/str it all seems a bit put on.
nico is a bit of a breath of fresh air, but how long before he get robotisized?

and good piont about gronholm - public direct critiscm of the team will either push them to deliver, or have you looking for a new job.

and montoya and villeneuve aren't the 'charachters' of th epitlane everyone thinks. with connie on one side and ron on the other montoya hasn't said a word wrong for ages, and jazque avoids the press so doesn't say much at all :|

almost everything about F1 now is crap, but i'll still get up early, or late? to watch the australian parade - just beacuse its called f1 :)
