you would call irvine and barrichello "awesome"?
i think they're both very good drivers but they dont belong in the 'awesome' category.
i was always a hakkinen fan, so i guess i'd have to go with him. i think on his day, he was frighteningly fast and noone could match him. think nurburgring 98, spa 2000 or even britain 2001. it is unfortunate that hakkinen had to wait until late 1997 before he had a half decent car, and he probably wasted his best years fighting in inferior equipment - a problem that schumacher never had. in 2001 though, he became demoralised with the poor speed and reliability of the mclaren and his performances suffered. having now gotten used to the idea of a competitive car, mika just gave up.
it wasnt by accident that schumacher has had better machinery (as i touched on before). he did impressive things in mercedes sports cars, signed for jordan and impressed them, and as we all know, certainly impressed flavio briatore and bernie ecclestone so much that by the next race he was sitting in a benetton alongside piquet. his performances in 1996 and 1997 when he didnt have the best car were superb, and being able to take the 97 championship down to the wire was a tremendous feat (despite villeneuve's repeated attempts to lose the title...but thats another topic).
i would compare hakkinen's 2001 with schumacher's 2005. both poor seasons by their standards, but it was schumacher who never gave up and continued to give it his all...unlike hakkinen who pretty well just crumbled and faded away into retirement.
