for example in Monza in 2000 the lap times during the safety car period were about 2:28 which means an average speed of roughly 140 kmph

on TV it looks like they are crawling :-o

The first Safety Car in F1 was definately not Imola '94, it was some time back in the '70s.

*Looks in F1 book*

1973 Canadian GP, apparently there was mass confusion and it picked up the wrong car etc.

well it must have not been used since then, or a few years after that, as in all the documentaries i've seen about Senna's death, they keep reminding us that it was the first time the SC was used.

maybe they got rid of it after a few years, then brought it back for '94? i don't know.

I thought it got used in Hungary 1992 didn't it? I read in one of those Murray Walker's Grand Prix Year books.

Or the car was on standby anyway, think the car was a Ford Escort XR3i :D

I think they introduced the wooden plank rule (not to be worn down more than 10mm) after Senna's death. This would stop the cars running too low.

they basically used to use whatever car the race organisers could find, and then mercedes offered a permanent safety car, which is probably better coz teh driver dont have to learn a new car each race

maybe I said it wrong way.

You want to have a fast ride and you have to chose between:

AMG mercedes and ferrari f430, they both cost about the same (I'm talking probably about the best that AMG can offer). Which one would you chose?

You would probably chose F430 because:

1. Ferrari sounds expensive, they made/make some of the fastest and most beautiful cars. On the other hand, some mercedes models can cost the same as ferrari's, but mercedes doesn't sound as expensive as ferrari, it's nothing special. You see a mercedes on the street and you say: ''Oh look, another boring germany designed mercedes'', but when you see a ferrari, lambo or 911 carrera you say: ''Wow, look at that car!''.

2. Mercedes have such boring design IMO (as most of german cars), they are usually in boring silver color and because of that they don't stand out. I think that most people that don't watch F1 often even don't see the safety car if they don't look closly (even if they do, they don't know which model is it) but if F1 would use some sportiar brand for SC many people would notice that SC is there and it would be better for the spectators too, because most of them would rather see a sport car instead of mercedes (even if it's so sportier and whatever, it's only a mercedes after all).

3. Yes, I hate most of german cars

4. Mercedes should use F1 for promotion of their road cars, like BMW does in motogp when they give one of their cars to the fastest man on official tests and one to the best qualifier. It's true that this would be more complicated in F1 because of other car companies, but it would be a good promotion even if the car would be given away for charity.

5. This post sounds totally weird to me, because I'm sleepy at the moment. I hope you'll understand what I want to say.

6. The end.

TV does slow it down to the eye, when i was at last years British GP and the safety car went out before qualifying to do a quick checkof the circuit, it came round the beckett/maggot complex almost on two wheels.

i used to to think that it tootled round, but it was having the living daylights thrashed out of it. :)

Everyone around us was laughing and commenting about it.

Certainly opened my eyes a litte :)
