Hey guys,

does anyone have a photograph or a few photographs, of any modern day F1 car with the vapor trails visible off the rear wing corners? I need it for an assignment in my aerodynamics class :)

Thanks in advance

there's that Senna/Mansell side by side famous picture, and also you should check out planes and the Sonic Boom effect :)

i've not done a thorough search for pics (i have some saved in my pc, will try to find them later) but this site tries to explain some of the aerodynamic engineering of F1 cars:

no need for caps was there now? how come we dont see them that much these days, is it because the cars are so aerodynaicaly efficient?

I think we don't see vapour trails any more because rear wings in the 80s and early 90s were much bigger and you would only see the vapour if there was moisture in the air.

and obv they only showed on in-efficient cars.

so therefore it is highly unlikley we would see them nowadays.

... except on the super aguri cars since they're running cars that are 27 years old...

Last time I saw vapor trails was Silverstone 03. But as MikeF1 points out, there was moistue in the air when it happens and that weekend had plenty of it.

whats this bollox about only showing up on inefficient cars? if there's enough moisture in the air, it'll show up on every car, no matter how efficient it is. with the new rear wing regs, they remove that 'corner' you used to have on the rear wing, created between the endplate and the element.

but its still there but further forward now, and they try to cut bits out of the endplate to stop vortices appearing.

Muks is right, it's the vortices that create these vapour trails, hence why it is also quite common to find them on the wingtips of fighter planes.

lol.

really another reason for the vapour trails was because the cars were inefficient.
ask a expert about why. coz i dont know... its true.
I read it somewhere. sorry i dont know where from. but ill look.. just to prove you wrong ;)

Yeah but inefficient in the sense that they create drag in a focused area.

every car had to have the wings a certain way, so all the cars would create vortices.

if everyone could make wings exactly how they like, with no regs, then they could create a wing without "corners" to stop vortices occuring, then you could judge and say that 1 car is less efficient than another, by looking at which wings produced them.

but the regs say that wings have to be made to a set specification, so either they will all have them, or they all won't have them, or will have them to varying degrees.

yea. but still the wings act differntly on different cars.

but yes no luck in finding the passage muks. altho i did find something interesting about how every1 was shocked at JB and how good he was. then Kimi came in the equation and every1 forgot about Jense :P
