Formula One has skipped from one qualifying format to another in recent years and 2006 is no exception as the series prepares for the latest attempt to make the qualifying format both entertaining and relatively fair for all the participants.

Knock-out qualifying is the new system in place for the coming season and the FIA President Max Mosley is one of many who predict that the format will be confusing for race fans.

The system will see all the cars take to the circuit for the first 15 minutes of the session with thee slowest five removed after 15 minutes. Another 15 minutes later the next slowest five are removed leaving the ten (or perhaps 12) on track for the final 20 minutes.

the fastest lap might not be pole as the fastest lap will be set before the last 10 cars quali on a race fuel load

and if it rains it'll mess things up too

but at least it'll be fair on everyone with the weather as they don't have a slot allocated to them before the session.

yeah i think marcl's right it wont mess things up. but more likely than not the fastest lap will not be pole. its not that this qualifying format is confusing (well not to genuine fans like us) but it just doesnt capture the true ecssence and feeling of what qualifying really should be about...

In pre 2003 qualy the fastest lap has never been automatically the pole lap, since it could have been posted on a Friday where it didn't count.
