What with Vodafone leaving Ferrari at the end of 2006, it's gonna be fun watching F1 in the future. Will keep the car painters in the GP4 community busy too.

itanium is also hp we use the servers at work, so it could sort of still be split.

Sort of strange hp pull out and intel join

Itanium is just a high end server proccessor / platform by intel, like an Intel Xeon, or Pentium 4, but very expensive, and very specialised. HP, Sun etc all build servers with them I'm sure.

the itanium chip was developed with hp and intel, only hp systems use them at the mo.

Awesome. I know there's been a lot of trouble around itanium2 because it uses a completely new architecture (not x86) and isnt compatable with any 32bit applications except through emulation. Who do you work for?

From what I've read the project isnt looking too rosy atm.

hp are stopping the old risk servers now and will just use the itanium chip.

We have had no probs with ithe chips just the ram disks power supplied lol.

Its all 64 bit unix and windows, have only seen windows on a training course.

I work for a retail company and we have had them a year we run unix and sap on them.

Not many firms are switching to them yet but they are the future and i can not wait till they make them small enough for a pc :)

The chip they are having probs with is the new dual core one keeps getting delayed but from what we have been told it wont be long now. The chips are so different from anything else.

Yeah, they sure are. The cpu industry though is very resistant to change - all amd and desktop intel cpus are based on x86, which is a really quite poor standard from the early 90s, with bits bolted on all the time. One day they'll all have to dump x86 and go RISC or down the itanium esque route.

Its brave that intel and HP have stuck to their guns over this, especially since its SO expensive to R+D, and the number of orders have been pretty tiny. I hope they don't give up because a fresh start is a good thing, just need eveyone in the industry to think so too. Whether itanium is the right fresh start is another question i guess.

all the latest versions of hpux is for itantium so they have to stick to it and after they said risk servers will no longer be made meant they were 100% behind it.

Stories have it that hp have put more money into the project than intel and intel wanted to stop as their rep was on the line.

HP are pushing forward and soon people will have to move over atleast when then by new servers like we did.

The number of orders are picking up now and the hp training courses are based on itantium now which a year ago they were not and this gave us a head ache.

But when u see the speed of them compaired to risk its just amazing
