This track is a Tilke design. The layout, however, is not his invention. The track looks like the Chinese letter
Shàng, used for Shanghai.
Chinese characters are often symbols of abstract ideas. "Shàng" originally symbolized the concept of "above, upper, previous, get on, go up", hence its form: a horizontal line with a thingy on top pointing upwards.
"Shàngcì" for example means "God". Funny that "shàngchuáng" means "go to bed", or "have sex".
