I'm not very familiar with term "SPOILER", but I think this topic could need it.

In 2003 I made an Excel file to compute the championship in different points systems. I think could be interesting to see it:

Current points system (top 15): (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1)

1 Fernando Alonso Renault 117
2 Kimi Raikkonen McLaren 94
3 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 60
4 Juan Pablo Montoya McLaren 60
5 Giancarlo Fisichella Renault 45
6 Jarno Trulli Toyota 43
7 Rubens Barrichello Ferrari 38
8 Ralf Schumacher Toyota 38
9 Jenson Button BAR 32
10 Mark Webber Williams 29
11 Nick Heidfeld Williams 28
12 David Coulthard Red Bull 21
13 Jacques Villeneuve Sauber 9
14 Felipe Massa Sauber 8
15 T.Monteiro Jordan 7

Pre 2003 & post 1989 points system: (10-6-4-3-2-1)

1 Fernando Alonso Renault 101
2 Kimi Raikkonen McLaren 83
3 Juan Pablo Montoya McLaren 46
4 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 40
5 Giancarlo Fisichella Renault 29
6 Jarno Trulli Toyota 26
7 Rubens Barrichello Ferrari 23
8 Nick Heidfeld Williams 18
9 Jenson Button BAR 17
10 Ralf Schumacher Toyota 16
11 Mark Webber Williams 13
12 David Coulthard Red Bull 7
13 Jacques Villeneuve Sauber 4
14 T.Monteiro Jordan 4
15 Alex Wurz McLaren 4

Pre 1990 points system (9-6-4-3-2-1) (without 11 best results selection):

1 Fernando Alonso Renault 95
2 Kimi Raikkonen McLaren 77
3 Juan Pablo Montoya McLaren 43
4 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 39
5 Giancarlo Fisichella Renault 28
6 Jarno Trulli Toyota 26
7 Rubens Barrichello Ferrari 23
8 Nick Heidfeld Williams 18
9 Jenson Button BAR 17
10 Ralf Schumacher Toyota 16
11 Mark Webber Williams 13
12 David Coulthard Red Bull 7
13 Jacques Villeneuve Sauber 4
14 T.Monteiro Jordan 4
15 Alex Wurz McLaren 4

Pre 1990 points system (9-6-4-3-2-1) (with 11 best results):

1 Fernando Alonso Renault 84
2 Kimi Raikkonen McLaren 77
3 Juan Pablo Montoya McLaren 43
4 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 39
5 Giancarlo Fisichella Renault 28
6 Jarno Trulli Toyota 26
7 Rubens Barrichello Ferrari 23
8 Nick Heidfeld Williams 18
9 Jenson Button BAR 17
10 Ralf Schumacher Toyota 16
11 Mark Webber Williams 13
12 David Coulthard Red Bull 7
13 Jacques Villeneuve Sauber 4
14 T.Monteiro Jordan 4
15 Alex Wurz McLaren 4

EXOTIC POINTS SYSTEM: MotoGP system (25-20-16-13-11-10-9-8-7-...)

1 Fernando Alonso Renault 300
2 Kimi Raikkonen McLaren 255
3 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 170
4 Juan Pablo Montoya McLaren 165
5 Rubens Barrichello Ferrari 153
6 Jarno Trulli Toyota 145
7 Ralf Schumacher Toyota 142
8 Giancarlo Fisichella Renault 133
9 Jenson Button BAR 106
10 Mark Webber Williams 100
11 David Coulthard Red Bull 94
12 Nick Heidfeld Williams 93
13 Felipe Massa Sauber 88
14 Jacques Villeneuve Sauber 71
15 T.Monteiro Jordan 58
16 Christian Klien Red Bull 58

Alonso is only champion with the current one, although close to the title with every one except the system of the late 80s, when only 11 best results were counted. In this case the fight would be veeeery close.

how did that 11 best results thing work? i've never heard of that one, only started liking f1 in the mid 90s...

It were counted only the 11 best results. In 1988 Senna had less points than Prost, but his 11 best results were better than the Prost ones, so the sum gave Senna the championship.

This year only Alonso has more than 11 races in the points: 6 first, 5 second, 2 third, 1 fourth. So in this case, the eleven best results are 6 victories, 5 second places, total 84 points.

ahhh

so did a lot of drivers just give up if they couldn't get into their top 11 finishes? if they have a damaged car and are running in 9th place, did they just park it?

MS is 4th and JPM is 3rd. They have the same amount of points, yet JPM has more wins.

What do we learn from it? It doesn't really matter for the standings how many points you get.

historically I believe it does matter. I think this new points system and this comparison shows us the problem. With the amount of points given out Alonso in the history books will look more impressive than mansell, senna and other drivers. I am speaking wayyyy down the road.

No world champion aside from schumacher has ever had that many points. Wins arent reward enough. If this was a few years ago, we would have seen far more impressive drives, and alonso not winning the championship souly on consistancy. Quite disappointing. I am shocked that no one has really complained about this.

Also as a back up point for this argument, look at Rubans last season, more points than any other world championship aside from MS. I believe with the amount of races in a given season F1 can afford to go back to the old points system, and qualy system.

Well, I will not complain because this is a "relative" problem. I mean, I will not doubt about Mansell's quality because Alonso got more points. Things change and that's all.
In the old times, as b-tone mentioned, there were much less races per championship so it is usless to compare with a 50 years gap (or even 15).

The system is equal for everyone. Alonso took profit of it and was able to win. Next year perhaps it is Kimi who wons using the best of the points system.

Anyway, with the old system Alonso would have 101 points which quite a big amount of points.

And finally, in my opinion, the points system have an impact on the strategy for the season. I mean, in a 11 best results system, I suppose the teams would have a different approach to a race, not so based on reliability, so it is difficult to talk like "what if..." ("Butterfly effect?" :-P )

Anyway, the gap between Kimi and Alonso it is quite big in every system (but the 11 best results).

Apart from complete anaroks who only look at numbers and statistics I dare say the world gives a wet fart about which point system is being in use.

Just FYI: This 10-6-4-3-2-1 system was first introduced in 1991, not 1990...

I much prefer the 10-6-4-3-2-1 system myself, but to be honest, in any system, if your car doesn't finish, it makes no difference.

Yes, but that 3rd place shows no indication of quality.

Driver quality is a debatable in Formula 1.

The best 11 races point system was used in championships shorter than 2005. So, that should be changed to best 13,14 or 15 races. It's stupid to have 19 races and take in account only 11 (57%). For me it should be 75 %, that is 14.25, so around 14 or 15
