Heidfeld signs for BMW for 2007-08

Nick Heidfeld has signed a two-year contract to race for the new BMW works team in 2007-08, according to Autosport-Atlas.

But it is still not clear where the German will race next season due to the complicated and inter-dependent situation in the Formula 1 driver market at present.

Yup, to be honest I wish Felipe would have stayed at Sauber. But that's good for Nick.

Can you imagine if Massa had been contractually bound to stay with Sauber / BMW, and Heidfeld would have been the prime candidate for Ferrari...? That would have been great!

P.S. I know this is only hypothetical, since Ferrari would most probably have bought out Massa's contract.

Very interesting L.S. I think it is likely that F1's CRB will say Williams have the right to expect Button to drive for them next year (and for however long their contract with him is) and thus have the problem of 3 into 2. And that means they can either "loan" either Webber or Heidfeld out to someone else or they can sell the contract of one of their three drivers to make money to pay for the Cosworth engines.

And since it is more likely that Heidfeld will go, and go to Sauber/BMW, then I think old Frank would love to "sell" Heidfeld to BMW and get some money off their ex engine partner.

he should sell button back to bar, dump webber, keep heidfeld unless bmw really want him, take on rosberg and another rookie and spend a year or two building a good car, building up some young drivers, and basically rebuilding the team and have them competeing again in a year or two.
2006 will be a struggle for williams so might as well strugglea nd save if you can

Yeah, Webber was good when at Minardi/Jaguar but I've much admired Heidfeld's getting on to get points, even when he is behind Webber on the grid. And Pizzoni's drive to get points (2?) after not driving for 3 months is good. Sell Webber off to Renault and Button back to BAR. Then drive Heidfeld and Pizzonia, like b-tone said, Williams won't be back winning for a while yet, so they can develop their young drivers and have one of the drivers they've tested as a reserve driver and another as a tester.

That's 4 pretty good, promising and cheap drivers to help develop the future Williams'.

webber was good on 1 lap quali thats it. His team mates at minardi were not good so he looked better. Jag were only ever a 1 car team in the races klien was close

Williams won't get Button, and they shouldn't.
This is what they will get: an awful lot of money for selling JB's contract to BAR.
And Heidfeld, for another year, proving again to be better than Webber, and probably a lot cheaper.As for 2006, I am confident that Williams will still be able to put together a great car, as usual, so the damage may only be comparable to 1998-1999.

It's a pitty for them Heidfeld moves on...

it was kinda obvious this was gonna happen, given heidfeld's connections already with bmw and given that they would be wanting a german driver and given that hes by far the most talented driver on the grid

So, as theyve signed him for 2007, this must mean that villeneuve will be on the grid next year then...

Briatore is Webber's manager of sorts, so Webber could quite easily end up at Renault. But, Webber has wanted and apparently still does want to drive for Williams.....

I Doubt he'll be moving to Renault any time soon.
