Breaking news from the ITV website:

Ferrari has confirmed that Sauber driver Felipe Massa will join Michael Schumacher in its 2006 line-up and has announced that Rubens Barrichello will leave the team at the end of the year.

Following intense speculation over the weekend, Ferrari has taken up an option on Massa that dates back to 2001.

"I am very happy and proud to be racing with Ferrari in 2006," Massa told his official website.

"I feel ready for this new challenge, which is the best opportunity of my career.

"I am aware of the responsibility it places on me and I cannot wait to be part of a team like Ferrari, alongside the best driver in the world, Michael Schumacher."

The Brazilian driver, currently in his third season with Sauber, took a year out from racing in 2003 to fulfil the role of test and reserve driver for Ferrari.

He has long been linked with a return to the Scuderia and is managed by sporting director Jean Todt's son, Nicolas.

"I wish to thank Peter Sauber for having had faith in me over these past three years. I will do my very best in the final six races of the season to get the best possible results for his team.

"Maranello has believed in me since 2001, when I had yet to make my Formula 1 debut.

"Now, I am in my third season as a Sauber driver and I can also count on a year's experience as a Ferrari test driver, an experience which helped me to grow a great deal."

Rubens has rejected Ferraris' offer:
Rubens Barrichello was offered the opportunity by Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo to stay with the world champion team, according to the official Ferrari website.

Ferrari confirmed on Monday that the Brazilian is to be replaced by compatriot Felipe Massa in 2006

"We gave Rubens Barrichello the possibility of accepting an offer of a multi-year contract, longer therefore than the length of his relationship with us," said Montezemolo.

The multi year contract offered Barrichello the chance to move away from the driving aspect of his previous years with Ferrari, and concentrate solely on licking the boots of the likes of Jean Todt, Montezemolo and of course Schumacher.
It is unclear why Barrichello turned the offer down.

Or perhaps Ferrari have decided he's more help to them when he's driving for BAR.

I very happy for Massa, he will prove there how great driver he is and Im also happy for Barichello because he will have chance to fight for champ. But I dont know what you guys have against Webber? You say that he is average driver, well Im not quite sure that Williams would like to have average drivers, and also he is average in comparasion with who? Heidfeld is better just a bit but season isnt over yet.

i always said webber was overrated as he had never proved himself against a 'known' driver

he was always partnered by newbies and young drivers

no doubt webber is special over 1 lap (altho hungary qually was terrible) but he has yet to convince me on race pace

nick is opposite- he is schumacher like over race pace, but not schuey like in qually - still fast but not special like a jpm or kimi or alonso

@webber fan - i also respect yours too :D only coz i like your siggy ;) lol

You are not convinced in his race pace? He started 16 and finished 7th.

But he is much slower in the race than in quali. He looses places constantly, if he starts higher up the grid.

Rubens Barrichello in team B.A.R, will be the next champion to the world, if Michael Schumacher takes care of!

That is true and it hurts me. But I think he has improved trough this season and still improving. And guys Williams is crap at the moment, it is easy for Raikkonen and Alonso to be consistent when tey have best cars.

yeah, Barrichello is favorite for next champion in Bar, BAR is next champion of driver with Barrichello, and next constructors champion, I wait that the Pizzonia was for BAR, but the possibilities are few, Davidson are the favourite person or thing, but still it has hopes
