@ Nickv, I don't understand your point. you're saying that if there was a tarmac runoff instead of gravel, MS would have been hurt more?
IIRC, he had a rear brake failure, so if there had been tarmac, he might have been able to slow down more due to the friction between tyre and tarmac. as it was gravel, there was no friction, so not as much speed was knocked off before he hit the barrier as could have been if it was tarmac.
there's 2 ways to look at tarmac vs gravel runoffs.
tarmac helps slow cars down better, but allows them to 'cheat' some corners, and they're made easier so some of the skill is taken away.
gravel punishes drivers who make mistakes, and can sometimes flip cars if they go in sideways, and doesn't knock much speed off, and might result in less cars in the race, but you have to be more accurate and drive better.
so i don't know which is better.
