From another forum.......

BAR's test drivers Anthony Davidson and Enrique Bernoldi tested the first prototype of Honda's V8 engine at the Mugello circuit last week, reportedly lapping around four seconds slower than with the current power unit.

BAR's technical director Geoff Willis said:

Quote:
"It is a very strange engine. Really low. Really, really low and shorter than usual, with a lack of power and a lower stroke curve compared to the actual V10, as logical.

"But it will still be a very interesting engine, in some ways more similar to a MotoGP engine than an actual F1 V10."

Cool... hope their in 06 champ ;)

4 seconds isnt much. They could probably get it down to two or three and by next year probably only 1 second or possibly the same speed ;)

Remember thatn the 1994 Benetton Ford Zetec engine was a V8 (although 3.0) and was quite powerful, there will be difference but not very big.

I thought it was a 3.5, and that the FIA changed to 3.0 in 1995

Yep, in theory the changes aren't very big at all - just lop off 2 cylinders. In practice this doesn't work. It sounds like they are going to compromise torque for power - going for a higher revving engine with a shorter stroke. I'm no engineer though, so i could be missing the point, but it sounds logical.

hmm.... did they test how much power would they get if they limit revs on V10?

Rookie question: Will a v8 engine sound the same as a v10? Or will it sound like the safety car... :|

ANZE they can get the same power out of a rev limited v10 as a 2.4L V8

Something stoddie was grumbling about the FIA shouldve done cause it wouldve saved a ton of money

so why should they make V8 engines? revs will be higher and the possibility of a failure is bigger than with limited v10

but coz of the weight and size decrease the engineers can simply make the components stronger.. and that should not effect the weight too much..

but if u go back to the main cause being implementing v8 - wasnt it to safe money and improve safety? (max's common statement which goes with every rule change now*Rolls eyes*) they could achieve both safety and cost reduction by putting rev limiters on the v10s so i dont understand the logic behind this.

well limiting engines would go against everything that is F1. atleast being v8's it will take a little time to claw back up to 1000bhp

Well there's always been a limit to the size the engine can be, 3L, and that's a limitation. From that you can only get a certain amount of HP, and a certain amount of revs before it becomes too much.
