I think it was the 1998 (1999?) Italian GP, there Hakkinen spun off in the lead of the race at the first chicane.

I don't remember if it was a car error or driver error, but he spun off, jumped the fence, broke down and cried and the Italian tifosi loved every second of it!

HAHA, Mika Hakkinen eventually won the 1998 & 1999 crowns anyway, so who's crying now???

Yes, Mika was brilliant in those seasons! ...erm,except for the mistakes. But Brilliant anyway. I really miss Mika.

I think the best bit was when he got out of the car and threw the steering wheel right into the ground right in frontr of the fans.

In Imola he got onto throtle (spelling) to eary in the last chicane, and he hit the wall because his rear wheels were spinning to quickly.

1999 at Monza

yeah Imola '99 his car got a little bit on the kerbs, so he corrected the car, but it gripped suddenly and threw him into the wall and out of the race.

at Monza '99, he was leading comfortably, and shifted down to 1st instead of 2nd, and this threw the car round, and he threw the wheel before the car had hardly stopped sliding on the grass (if he had stopped it stalling he should have been able to reverse and carry on) and when he got out of the car he took his glove off and threw it into the ground with much anger.

1992: Started 11th and retired with engine problems

1993: No race

1994: Started 7th and finished 3rd

1995: Started 7th and finished 2nd

1996: Started 4th and finished 3rd

1997: Started 5th and finished 9th

1998: Started 3rd and finished 4th

1999: Started 1st and spun off

2000: Started 3rd and finished 2nd

2001: Started 7th and retired with gearbox problems.

I would say that he did pretty well at Monza. Dunno if you are also referring to Imola as it is based in Italy as well.

Bare in mind that Mika would have been in the top 5 in 1997 if he didn't suffer a puncture on the right front late in the race.

monza 1999 one of the most epic races i shall ever remember, partly due to mika spinning off in the close title fight, and partly because of Murray Walkers amazing ability to get you out of your seat, on the edge etc.

he downchanged 2 gears instead of 1 thus selecting the wrong gear andspinning him out

been meaning to ask for agggeeess. lol

I remember when we were in Imola watching the race from Rivazza corner when Hakkinen had a gearbox problem (mclaren said so later that day) with a lot of white smoke and whole crowd went totally wild, it was just amazing
