Probably imola was the mistake people are talking about in 1999 when Mika was leading and went off on the curb and hit the wall.

Why is it we're only dealing with drivers of the last decade or so? The sport is 54 years old!!!
Delatraz has to be up there in contention as one of the worst, without a doubt, however I can't help but think if we search back through the history books there are many others whose names could be mentioned.
Back in the 60s drivers used to lease factory cars of teams such as Ferrari, enter them as a privateer, and finish 4 laps down on a car the same as theirs - in a 25 lap race.
Whoever mentioned Martin Brundle obviously doesn't know a great deal about the sport. Detriot 1984, finished a close second to Piquet, and was closing (was about 2 seconds at the end I believe). Brundle also stood on the podium numerous times through his own merrit rather than anything else. He didn't always have the greatest car or make the best career moves, so rather than being a crap driver, I think he made crap desicions outside of teh cockpit that reflected poorly on his performance inside it.
Moreno was actually not a bad driver, although again never really got his chance. Debuted well for Benetton in 1990, finishing second to Piquet at Suzuka. Got booted in favor of one Michael Schumacher and his career never recovered.
Lets not forget Larry Perkins either. One of Australias greatest Touring Car drivers, but could barely string a lap together in an F1 car. Oh, and we're forgetting Michael Andretti- always good for an accident at the start.

Al Pease... That's the one!

Oh, we're all forgetting one Bernard Ecclestone once drove F1 too...

brundle could have been world champ remember it was nearly him sitting in the williams in 1986 and not mansell, If he did not break his ankle.

Martin was a bloody good driver his fights with senna in f3 are the best just a shame he never really got the breaks in f1, was close to ms in 1992 then got dropped.

okey dokey.
i can see that some of the names i mentioned here are not making some folks happy.
well please remember that the names listed that i wrote are of course personal choices for perosnal reasons.
brundle was metioned for a good reason in my eyes and that is for the reasons i metioned.. when you look at his grand prix prix carreer and what he achieved in both his sportscar careeer and grand prix career then he was not the best grand prix driver.. the worst by no means at all when you compare hima against senna as he was in his early career. i bet most of the drivers in the list i wrote wish they could be compared to such a driver in there careers
maybe he should not have been mentioned on the list but he was a name that came to mind.. probaly that his worst was the fact that he never fullfilled what his early career promised..
sorry for any offence caused with that one
the other i do stick by on the most part
maybe not the total worst but they were bad in there own ways.. some more than other and they are but just the more recent people over what someone has already called a 54 year grand prix life and again this is just one opnion for own reasons
as mentioned diniz did ok after buying his ligier ( and i do respect him for what he achieved and im sure i dont supposed i caould do as good even if i dream i could)
as for verstapfen, looking at his grand prix career it was so stop and start.. he was fired i guess mainly from his drives for financial reason but when you look at him he was never great and was fired for other reasons beyond such as performance.. fast maybe, but not a driver that deserved the praise he got.. the hype if you like.
an also man that in my opinon should have gone else where and saved his career.. for me that whats made him bad

and just to add yet another point of contention and to also prove that people views may not be understood as maybe mine were is this,
michael schumacher in his own ways could be described as one of the worse drivers ever when you look at his career in various parts.
yes the man has achieved a lot and all respect to the man for that
but in my opinion hes nothing special
when you look at all the greats from the past they have all had team mates that race them and competition from within the team. michael has never had that at all as far as im concerned.. you first and biggest rival is your team mate.
michael never has had that not even in his current barrichello team mate
yes F1 rules say that theres not supposed to be team orders but we know that there are verbal codes etc said over the radio,s and also when rubens was hired we know he was clear number and was not allowed to race schumi.. just cause rules say one thing dosnt mean the legal contract between ferrari and barrichello changes does it!!!!
ok.. that just my view.. so michael schumacher is the worse at being good.. lol
ok ill end it there and hope my mind and logic is sorta understood.. if not..

TOUGH :)

The same could be said for Nelson Piquet or Niki Lauda. The former had Mansell in '86 but was the only time he had a competitive teammate throughout his career, Schumi aside.
Lauda. Prost in 1984 was about it. I don't even remember who his teammate was in 1975 or 76.
Jackie Stewart could be put in that category too - there's a man who won 27 Grands Prix from just 99 starts. THAT is impressive, as much as I don't like the man, it has to be admired.
Emerson Fittipaldi too. Had Peterson when he was at Lotus, but when he went to McLaren he had... erm... ahh... Was it a very old Denny Hulme?

The difference was though with piquet, Lauda there were many cars that could win GPS so they had to fight everyone f1 was very different back then.

But to be honest Piquet has never really been high on many peoples list for the best driver nether for that matter was emerson.

I don't want to be sexiest, but there was a woman called Giovanna Amati who "raced" fice times in 92, she was unable to clasify for the race and her times were years light than his teammate ones(in Brahbam car in the last days), but was replaced by Damon Hill and there was an spectacular change (to called in some way).

Anyway, that year there was some pearls of F1.

One guy called McCarthy set impressive times (indeed), although the team didn't help him to much, it was even worst than a F3000 team. (The team was called something like ...MODA..., and set times about 15-20 seconds slower than poleman).

I think Paul Belmondo was worst than Inoue.
Deletraz was another of "Hall of Fame" star.

I hace some F1 magazines since 1990, I think I can fins some interesting cases.

Mazzacane wasn't bad, remember Indy 2000 when he ran 9 laps in 3rd place holding Hakkinen, I think the worst is Inoue, but Rosset wasn't going to race in 1998 until BAT bought Tyrrell, because Tyrrell had signed Takagi and Norberto Fontana. Inoue was also involved in a funny accident in 1995.
His car stopped at Monaco,in Tabac I guess... Taki was removing the steering wheel to get out of his Footwork when the Safety-Car crashed into the car.
Result: The Footwork turned-over!!!!! Unluckily, there's no video, only a pic on the net.

Just to add to the ones already submitted: Perry McCarthy wasn't actually that bad, what you have to bear in mind was that Andrea Moda actually almost got kicked out for bringing the sport into disrepute, by doing such things as sending McCarthy out on intermediates in a dry session, and not turning up full stop in France!

Brundle did indeed fail to live up to his promise, but as has been mentioned, that's probably because of the teams he drove. He was, however, in line for a 1993 Williams seat, but some Hill guy got it ;)

Taki Inoue was worse than bad, as was Delatraz. Delatraz only overtook one driver in his career in a straight fight - insanely enough, it was Mika Hakkinen!

Ricardo Rosset is the worst I've seen!

And Tarso Marques was a promising talent in 1997, outqualified Ukyo Katayama many times and was never far behind him on race pace (sometimes ahead). Poor guy never got to grips with the 'new breed' of "racing" cars in F1.

Just had to remind myself of this thread :)

I just thought, not really an F1 driver as such, but what about (I think in 2002, might be wrong), when the driver of the medical car, an F3000 driver at the time, crashed on the Sunday morning at Monaco. Wasn't even needing to go fast :P
