Häkkinen is back after all?

Double world champion Mika Hakkinen may still return to Formula One in 2005, we can reveal.

Prior to Sir Frank Williams' (failed, as it turned out) signing of Jenson Button, the monosyllabic Finn - who 'retired' from the sport after eight seasons with McLaren in 2001 - negotiated secretly with the Grove-based chief.

'I was totally serious (about coming back),' he said.

But, when the Button-saga went to the contract recognition board for a protracted ruling, Hakkinen decided against waiting and simply told both Williams and BAR - who may also have had a vacancy - that all deals were off.

But that was then ...

Williams' long-time partner Patrick Head told Autosport this week that signing Hakkinen after three years on the bench would be a 'risk.'

He added: 'But you have to think seriously about a man who has the talent to twice beat Michael Schumacher to the title.'

I also heard their talks about a DTM deal which also would be awesome.

I only hope Mika doesn't do anything he will regret later.

In the interview in F1 Racing, Mika seems really determined to come back. I think the idea of a Williams seat would really motivate him to come back. He might not be up to F1 scratch yet (JV has proven that F1 cars advance a lot in a year), but he's been training 3 days on, one day off. So fitness isn't an issue.

I dont think that Hakkinen can do any worse than any of the others lined up for the Williams seat to be honest. So why not?

For as long as I can remember Zcott has had the red X, and that is counting in years, not months or weeks. Zcott isn't Zcott without The Red X in his sig! Very apt put by Villej: Zcott isn't Zcott without The Red X in his sig!

T'would be good to see Mika back in F1, though... I want either David or Nick in that Williams seat next season, too.

Echo1:

Why Heidfeld? What has he done? Yes, he beat Montoya to the F3000 title, but that was F3000 and that was a number of years ago. Since then, Nick has been quietly unimpressive - the stereotypical Sauber driver if ever there was one. At least Coulthard has won a handful of races....

I think Heidfeld should have a go in a top team - he might surprise us all. He's better than the teams he's driven for.

Well, actually Montoya beat Heidfeld in 1998. In 1999 whem he won the championship, Montoya was in the CART series
