I think 1999 was the last time this happened at a Grand Prix, with the Malaysian GP? But whatever happened to the familiarisation days that the FIA used to allow on new circuits?

Has it been completely disbanded or just forgotten? Was good as you got an extra session!

Just a thought ;o)

they usually have it on a thursday but don't actually run on the track.

they do track-walks and makes notes etc.

on the silverstone GP weekend schedula, it said 'Thursday, 14.00-15.00, Track Familiarisation', then after that they have the press conferences and stuff.

No Muks_C, on new tracks that they have never driven on before, they used to have an extra day with 1 or two practise sessions where they could aclimatise to the track.

I remember when they re-worked Imola in 1995 they had extra sessions on the thursday too, that was Mansell's first race in the re-vamped Mclaren if I remember right - didn't do too well in the session!

Did you read the first post?

the fact that he didn't know about the 1999 thing answers that question too, doesn't it? ;)

sorry, my bad :(

and surely they wouldn't need an extra day, they say a good driver can learn a new track in about 10 laps, so that'll be first session on friday morning.

Muks_C,
If they didn't need them - why do them?
Am sure it was also to do with extra coverage?????

Think maybe 95 was the last time.

Steve.

they did them cos they thought they would need them, but when they realised they don't need them, they got rid of it.

First of all just about everyone apart from Schumacher had already done some slow runs of the track. Secind 5 years ago the simulators they used were not very good - these days theyre good enough for drivers to know the track's character and gear shifts all that's left is getting to know the bumps and REALLY getting to know the track.. I guess they don't need these days anymore, just an idea :)
