ENGINE BOSSES AGREE TO POWER CUT

Engine manufacturers have agreed in principle to introduce 2.4 litre engines to F1.

From 2006 onwards, the current three-litre V10s will be replaced by 2.4-litre V8s, subject to ratification.

The change has been made in a bid to reduce speeds and cut costs.

The news comes 24 hours after F1 teams agreed to change the sport

I should expect they'd sound like the V8s that were used up until 1997(?) - quite good IMO

Yeah, i would have thought a 2.5L V10 with 800BHP and 17000rpm limiter would be better, V8s? why not call it Formula 8 now.

That would be a bit like arguing that the current formula should not be called F1, but F10 instead.

It's only after we've lost everything, that we are free to do anything.

They will definitely not sound like V8 Supercars. Like KornFreak said, they will rev a lot higher but the biggest difference is the capacity; V8 Supercars are 5.7 V8's

I've just remembered - they chose 2.4 V8 because, if you think about it, that's what you end up with if you lop 2 cylinders off of a 3 litre V10 ;)

I don't care what engines they're running full stop. Who cares about BHP so long as they are cheaper to run and produce than they are nowadays.

The only reason they're changing is costs - who on earth is complaining about speeds now ? None of the drivers are saying that cars are too fast and if any are then they shouldn't be on the grid. It'll be like wtaching nowadays' races in slo-mo :(

Contrary to reports that Formula One's carmakers now agree on switching to 2.4 litre V8s in 2006, some manufacturers are already 'rethinking their positions.'

BMW wants to retain the current V10 formula.

''We know there's going to be a 600bhp-plus Formula Two,'' Mario Theissen said.

He told Autosport that F1 therefore needs to be significantly more powerful and reckons the sport should instead turn to making the V10's engine-life longer.

The BMW motorsport director also believes that the FIA objective to cut costs would not be adequately met because a V8 would only be '5 percent' cheaper.
