i was reading a few days ago that in 1997 and 1998, McLaren pre-season test was not the West livery, it was an orange design, but I can´t find photos, and I don´t konw why they used that colours...

If someone knows that and has got any photos, can show them here?

thanks in advance

It's great what typing "Mclaren 98 testing" can bring up in google...

Anyhoo, the reason behind it is back when Mclaren first entered F1, the cars were orange. They did this in the 2005/2006 off season as well.

Wasn't orange the so-called McLaren house colour, like yellow for Ferrari?

Yep, orange is the McLaren colour. They still work orange into some of the team t-shirts and stuff. Odd, I never realised that they kept one of the orange 1998 cars, back then I though they would have just repainted the chassis and use it for half the season. kinda like what Brabham did halfway through 1992.

They will have done (unless it was written off in a test or something). Just as easy as it would have been to stick the final livery on it for the season, they could have done the reverse when it was donated to the Donny Collection.

97, 98 and 99 cars.

Yeah I guess it makes sense that they should repaint one for the craic, especially when you see just how many McLarens they have there:

Slobber! ;) By the way, here's some McLarens from the late 60s, showing the original colour!

I need to go back to the Donny museum.

My gallery from my only visit is a bit pants. Should go back and do it properly. Mind you with it all stuffed in there, and all that rope, info signs etc I'll have to get creative to make look good.

Is this a museum only for McLaren or are there other teams displayed as well?

They've got lots of cars, not just McLarens. They've got old Lotus, Tyrells, Vanwalls, Williams etc to name but a few. But their most prized room is probably the McLaren hall, it's got pretty much every McLaren since Ron Dennis was involved with the team.

They've also got more historic stuff, like Auto union (famous at Donington in the 30's) a couple of old Ferraris, Vanwalls etc. And a whole host of memorabilia that clutters the walls etc.

The MP4/8 that Senna used to win at Donington in 1993 is even there, or at lest they like to give the impression that it's the actual chassis he used in that specific race. It's given pride of place there with the Brazilian flag draped over it.

I'll sort out some of my old photos for you. Only they're not that good.

Right here we go then.

Some Lotus cars.

Tyrrell six wheeler.

Jackie Stewart, Tyrrell.

1997 Stewart GP.

Williams Honda, FW11.

Senna's Toleman.

James Hunt's Hesketh.

Williams Renault, FW14/B (not sure which)

Williams Renault, FW19, last Williams title winner :(

Some orange McLarens, so slightly back on topic!

More of the same.

...

McLaren Mercedes, 97 and 99 cars.

McLaren Mercedes MP4/10 (I think) famous because Mansell was too chubby for it.

Here's a 1994 car for you.

Senna's last championship car, and one of the most iconic cars for me, since I starting watching F1 in 1991.

Prost's Macca, probably from 1986.

They're a bit proud of this car...can't think why.

Yes there really are a stupid amount of McLarens.

A Ferrari in BRG? The heresy! Still could be worse, could be in dayglo orange.

Sir Stirling Moss, Lotus.

Back on topic!

BAR Honda, from 2000.

And finally on the subject of orange McLarens, here's one of mine from Jerez testing, Feb 2006.

The Lotii at the front of the first pic are actually Brabham BT20s and BT24s. There is at least 1 Lotus behind them - can't tell what the others are, but the blue one could be a Guy Ligier BT26, but I'm not sure it's light enough for his original blue. The one behind it looks like a Tasman Brabham BT26.

Personally I think the retro orange test livery was more ftw on the MP4/12 and MP4/13 of the 1997/8 off season.

Thanx for photos :)

Anyway, I will change the topic, now it will be about special liverys, like Coulthard´s in Brazil 08:):

Jordan´s tribute to Ayrton Senna in 2004, 10 years after his death:

Plz upload the pics like that :)

Someone who is NOT lazy will have to find the photos for these ;)

Jordan had a lot of them in 2004. There was the Nelson Mandela one as well in Germany i think.
Minardi had the blank livery at Silverstone same year(?) out of respect for John Walton, who'd just died. (and they got screwed by their sponsors over it as well)
Jag/Red Bull every year at Monaco with a different movie.
BAR with the 555 branding in China
Ferrari's blank car with black nose at Monza in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks.
(Jaguar and Jordan also did stuff for this; I think Jag had a black engine cover and Jordan had an American flag.)
The Bridgestone car used for testing Bridgestone tyres in early 1997. Dunno if anyone else tested it apart from Damon Hill.

I dunno if it counts, but the Lola Mastercard from Australia in 1998. Seen once (and boy could you get get a good look at them as they trundled around), then disappeared.

There's tonnes of other ones. Slightly related, does anyone remember this from 1993: McLaren adding "squashed hedgehogs" to their McLaren everytime they beat the Williamses (who were sponsored by Sega(Sonic the Hedgehog) that year). Sorry for the big image size, but you need it to see the hedgehog, right beside the wing-mirror.
