taken from autosport.com:

Motor racing legend and the only American-born Formula One world champion Phil Hill has died tonight in a California hospital due to complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 81 years old.

Phil Hill won the world championship driving for Ferrari in 1961, becoming the first American to do so, later to be followed only by Mario Andretti. But Hill remains to date the only native-born American to win the title.

I am so sad. He was such a great guy. Apart from being racing driver he was also very capable pianist. And very nice fellow. RIP Phill.

Also on the side note there is a strange coincidence, each time American driver went on to win WDC, his teammate would get fataly injured at Monza.

Amazingly after Fangio, only the 2nd WDC who died of old age.

Everything I've read about him says he was a true gentleman. Saw him in the pits at the USGP a couple of years ago, a guest of Honda I think. Sad to hear of his passing.

Makes me wonder if we will ever see a successful American driver in F1 again, never mind a World Champ....

Met him at Long Beach in 2006 as he was inducted into the Long Beach Hall of Fame with Dan Gurney. He looked pretty ill back then and I'm surprised hes lasted this long. The mans a gentleman, and a legend. RIP.
