So, these are the closest we have so far to genuine track-side previews to the how these refangled V6 Turbo engines are going to sound.

Ferrari:

In the back of a LaFerrari test mule

Mercedes:

From Mercedes shakedown yesterday at Silverstone

Renault:

From Toro Rosso shakedown yesterday at Misano

Once.. we get full grid of cars going hell for leather at the same time... it's going to sound just grande.

Renault sounds wierd

All sound awesome though. The V8s were stuck in the middle - no growl, no whine, no scream. I'm liking where this is heading. :)

In summary, for me...

Forve India - Not bad from what we've seen so far.
Williams - I think that front end is the most elegant of all the nose sections seen so far - but I am not a huge fan of the engine cover (and have not been since 2011)
McLaren - First impressions - HIDEOUS. It has grown on me though, especially with the aforeposted Photoshop :)
Lotus - One which I am fascinated by. TBH I think it doesn't look too bad, even though it has Dr. Zoidberg's nose ;) It actually looks like an evolution of the Walrus nose of 2004, which I've always had a soft spot for...
Ferrari - Hideous. Horrible nose, hate the engine cover and I don't like what they've done with the livery. Small but s*** changes in that respect IMO.

Force India - Horrible livery. Will have to wait to I see the actual shape of it before I make up my definitive mind.
Williams - Meh. Hate that blue colour, don't mind the nose - again will have to wait until the real livery is revealed before I make my mind up.
Mclaren - Amazeballs. Probably the best looking Mclaren for ten years. Love the all-silver solution I didn't expect that at all. Worried about it looking too much like a Merc from a distance. Like the nose not necessarily the end of it but the parts slightly behind that like the nose supports all just look futuristic and great to me. Almost looks like an IndyCar though :S
Lotus - I like the nose! I DON'T like that one tusk is longer than the other. I think this car also looks awesome from the side. However, James Allison, Eric Boullier and the head of IT have all gone. It's only a render. Does it exist? Will they even be on the grid?
Ferrari - Agreed on all points it is AWFUL. Don't like the livery or the baleen nose. Front end looks tacky with all the labels stuck on it. Only acceptable when viewed from the front.

Thanks for posting those engine sounds, the visuals of f1 2014 might take some getting used to but the sound should be epic.

guys, the ferrari looks like a vacuum cleaner :D :D

the lotus looks like a car from the game "dead race" (a game where you had to kill the other cars). and with this nose the Lotus looks in a good shape to destroy rear tyres and rear suspensions.

the mclaren and williams have a car-nose, which looks like the male organ with which you make children.

Absurd. But once they hit the track, we will get used to it. just as we did to the stepped noses last year.
Additionally, there have been much uglier cars in the past, so nothing new under the big blue sky.

P.S. everything said in this post is just my humble opinion, and I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings.

What I'm liking about these interpretations is how we all seem to disagree about which one looks the best - I can't remember the last season that contained cars with such different shapes. I'm sure you'd have to go back to the 90s.

And they appear to sound awesome. Which, I modestly add, I've been saying to anyone who asks all along ;););)

In 2005 BAR had about 3 different configurations for the winglets on the sidepods from which they chose during the season. Quite often you had both drivers ran different packages and even asymmetrical winglets.

Indeed, though I seem to be a major minority in liking the Ferrari.

I also concur with you on the engines, I've been looking forward to them ever since the announcement.

Did you see the sky news thing about the engine sound? They did just about the worst hash job conceivable.

They took a video clip of pre-season testing from last year. Played it to demonstrate the sound of the V8. And then played the same clip again dubbed with the audio of a dyno test from one of the new V6s.

It was the worst possible comparison and of-course they're all going "oh noes!" whilst conveniently glossing over the fact that the unaltered clip had the benefit of engines being ran in the actual car-track environment complete with all the atmospheric factors including the doppler effect.

Meanwhile the dyno dubbed clip had a sound of engine that was not in a car, not on a track with none of the factors of the track environment and no doppler effect.

I mean this is the level of sophistication we're treated by media and social networking discussing changes.

Lets not forget McLaren in 2010:

-----

Presentation of Sauber 16:00 CET according to Formula1.com (O)

Quote
Perhaps the most visually striking element of the Sauber C33-Ferrari is the very low, snout-like nose. The front wing pylon’s attachments on the nose have been moved out as far as possible allowed by the regulations to channel as much air as possible under the car.

Kimi, so, Massa Fernando Sebastian is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood that message?

I believe the 2011 McLaren also had asymmetrical sidepods.

I'm looking forward to the Sauber launch, they usually come up with something interesting over in Hinwil.

hehe... more images designed to hide the true extent of the finger nose.

Well, erm... that doesn't show us much. They may as well have not had a launch and waited until Jerez. Looks alright. I liked the livery so I'm glad they kept it. (Y)

One of the dullest driver pairings though.... not sure what'll happen.

I like how we appear to have completely different views about the cars. These are mine:

Ferrari: I'm really fond of it. Yeah it looks like a vacuum cleaner but it's (aesthetically) the best so far for me.
Sauber: Among the ones with fingers, the best. The dark livery helps a lot.
McLaren: OH GAWD NO.
Williams: Acceptable, considering the finger is quite smooth.
Force India: I'm really sure it has a finger, similar to the Macca in form but smoother and lower. Can't really tell yet but the livery is badass.
Lotus: *screams internally*

I can't help but laugh at the STR. It truly looks terrible.

The livery does nothing to compensate it either, why leave it blue?
