Wow, almost a bloodbath :-o. Ugly game, and Deco got a yellow card because it's the rule to give a yellow for delay of game, but Cocu should have gotten something as well.

Disgusting match, I was surprised to see so much violence from the Dutch side. FelipĆ£o having his team play dirty isn't any news, his teams were awful like that before he coached Brazil. He's from the south of Brazil, they are known for being too rough and physical (Rio Grande do Sul state).

I'm from Rio, a few states up in the map ;)

It was funny when Deco was being sent off, I was in a "Padaria" (store that sells bread and other stuff) owned by Portuguese people and the guy was there watching paying attention to the game and looking desolated, while I was laughing :p

What a match....

20 yellows, 4 reds. It was ridicoulous. And then Bouhlarouz got his second yellow for that 'accident' with Figo, that was nuts.

Holland deserved to win (and not only because I'm Dutch ;)) because they had some many chances and were simply better, but they couldn't score a goal out of the chances.

And why did Van der Vaart get yellow? I didn't see him do anything wrong.

Yeah, I'd worked out it was for time-wasting in the refs eyes (after a while), but it was absolutely astonishing he got booked for it. He held the ball for all of 2 seconds, before he was hauled to the ground. It's not like he kicked it away or anything. Beyond belief.

When the ref showed it at first I assumed he'd picked up the ball whilst it was still in play, believing the ref had blown for a free-kick, but that was apparently not the case.

I'm not going to defend the tackle on Ronaldo, the head-butt, or the other couple of dodgy tackles, but overall the refs grasp of that game was unbelievably poor. His temper seemed worse than that of the players. It's what you'd expect from you or I, not supposedly one of the top 50 refs on the planet.

LMFAO!! What a great match! I was laughing and cheering all the way through the last half hour :)

When Portugal went down to 10 men Holland had the chance to capitalise, but LOL!! Never before have I seen a team self-destruct in quite so spectacular a fashion. ;) They were just out of control, destroyed their own chances of winning in the second half. But then Portugal caught the bug and the whole match just descended into anarchy. Hahahahahaha!!!

And from an England fan's perspective, it was a fantastic result for us. :) Nearly the whole team on yellows, Ronaldo potentially injured, and the squad missing 2 key players (possibly Figo as well?). Fantastic!

The FIFA has explicitely demanded their refs to be very strict. I don't think that this ref was stricter than the others in the beginning. The difference is that most other teams got the message right after the first yellow cards - Holland and Portugal didn't. After all it was not the ref who made the fouls, it were the players and they should be bashed for it.

The ref basically lost it when he failed to see the Figo headbutt.

I'm sure you get the occasional feeling in your job that you're simply not in control of who you're teaching - I know I do. There were times when I first started out when they were almost bashing the hell out of me, when you lost your temper and basically started shouting at them. That's the feeling I got last night watching the match. The players had little respect for each other, but they had zero for the ref. Every other ref in this tournament has had some common sense about them, and if possible talked to a player about why he should have booked him, occasionally giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Perhaps it was to the letter of the law, but common sense should alway prevail. If you do lose the players and silly tackles continue to fly in you always get the 2 captains together and deal with it. This guy didn't do any such thing, he just ran up, brandished a card, and then ran off (if he wasn't surrounded by team personnel).

ITV said themselves that this guy had reffed one of the 1st games in the tournament, and were shocked he'd got another game.

It's not all about cards and whistles.

I do agree with you to some extant, however it is too easy giving all the blame to the ref. The comparison to the school situation isn't exactly working either, since there I am together with children who sometimes don't know any better. Here we have 22 adults who should know better. It is them who make the game what it is, not the referee. I can only say that I have zilch respect for grown ups who don't kow how to behave. They are an example for their fans - how can you expect hooligans to stay peaceful if not even the players can? What I saw yesterday was a disgrace for the sport and that was not the ref's fault alone. I expect to read other coments here once these players beat the @#$%& out of your Rooneys and Beckhams.
