jason culina shows him how it's done....

i think we're copping a rough deal from the refs. there's been a bit of gamesmanship i believe, trying to influence the refs into thinking we're dirtier than we are.

i'm certainly not saying we're perfect, far from it, but a 25-9 i think it was free kick count against brazil is probably over the top.

certainly grella's hack on ronaldo was highly ordinary but well done to ronaldo, he got back up pretty quickly from the only knock that did some damage, rather than the girly-men going down from a brush on the ankle and rolling around like they've been shot.

toughen up princesses!

They were really bad against japan, but against brazil, I thought they were much cleaner. Brazil were just as bad, but because they are brazil, they are infallible ;)

The moment you take Emerson out the whole problem is solved though :p

foul count Australia vs Japan: 22-11
foul count Australia vs Brazil 25-9

if Australia had cleaned up their act a bit between games, and if Brazil were just as bad, does the above suggest some form of predetermined refereeing? don't get me wrong, i'm not suggesting Australia should have won or anything like that, but that does seem more than a bit unfair.

and Ozz Man, i'm an Eels fan so let's not talk about it ;)

i wonder how long the soccer bubble will last though? i think the A-League pre-season kicks off fairly soon after the World Cup, but then its AFL/NRL finals so i think it'll be business as usual. The A-League proper is in October or something like that. Soccer will take over from rugby as the third footy code though- being a rugby player and fan don't get me started on the problems with Aussie rugby!

Gareth, the thing is the Aussies are used to a rougher way of playing and probably where they play it isn't looked as much as it should because it's just common (British footy, for example). So when they get to the World Cup they are faced with refs that follow the rules closer, but the same happens to other teams, like some African ones :)

some more stats (see I'm doing research and everything!!):

most fouls conceded after two games each:

Angola 51, Australia 47, Netherlands 47 and the average is 35. Italy and Spain seem to be the lowest with 21 and 20 respectively.

Australia has also the least ammount of free kicks given our way with 20, leaving us with a net count of -27, the worst of any team.

i see your point, proved by Angola being the number one dirtiest team, but there's the Netherlands up there with us in equal second!

There's only about two Australia based players in our squad, a couple of defenders who have yet to come on, while the rest are Europe based. Several are playing in the English Premier League, one in the Spanish La Liga(?), a couple in Serie A, a couple in the Dutch first division, a couple in Germany etc, so we should be used to tight, strict European reffing.

Maybe it's just an imprinted, undeniable Aussie urge to smash things!
