McManaman got plenty of chances at Real, he'd play every game many times the whole match.

Wow, busy man! Not only did he play every game many times, but he managed to do it ALL in one match! ;) No wonder he used to get knackered so easily.

got this email with attached pics from one of my Trinidad & Tobagoan friends on my course:

** THE HAND OF CROUCH **

How can anyone with eyes not see that this is a clear foul?

YOU SIMPLY CANNOT HOLD ON TO A PLAYER'S HAIR AND TURN HIM AROUND AND IT NOT BE CALLED A FOUL!!!!

In 1986 Maradona fisted in the ball, that was called 'The Hand of God'.

Today we have 'The Hand of Crouch'.

The only bit of hair on the defender's head that is facing that direction is the hair in Couch's hand!

Come on! What is Crounch doing? A hairdressing course on the football field? He is tugging at the defender's hair and this goal should NOT have been allowed!

What more evidence do you need? You cannot do that to a player and not be penalised!

Don't tell me the ref did not see. He has assistant refs who spot when a ball goes over the line way on the next side of the field! This is all about the 'big guns' finding their way to the next rounds plain and simple.

I have taken the time to ZOOM in since some people clearly have 2" monitors.

In some parts of the world this is called CHEATING ... in others, professional play.

How much you want to wager that if a T&T player had done this they would have been SENT OFF IMMEDIATELY.

Ridiculous!

--------------------------

while i think it's mainly sour grapes from my friends and probably other T&T people , why was it not picked up?

why has the T & T defender got his arms up in the air if not to impede crouch jumping for the ball?

On another day that could have been seen as a foul

If anythings its a 50/50

I take your friend has'nt mentioned all the over the top tacking and fouls commited by Trinidad and Tobago during their World cup campaign?

Maradonna used his hand to change the direction of the ball to score the goal, to compare that to a 50/50 challenge in the box that was a header is ridiculos

The defender had his hands over crouch before his head made contact with ball, if anything Crouch did well to score under the circumstances

A bit harsh to say that crouch delibrately target the players hair, but i can see from the pics that he hold of it, but time and time again we see shirt pulling in the box, so its not really that different in that respect.

I wouldnt say it was a delibrate act as crouch isnt that sort of player

That was a deliberate act ls - as I saw the goal in real time, I thought "he was climbing there" but on closer inspection, it was hair pulling. Thing is, it wasn't really needed - crouch is like 10000 times taller than the guy.

Funny how the commentators and everyone failed to mention it and failed to talk about stern john's marginally offside goal :S They did mention the hair pulling once on bbc highlights (the live match was on itv, who are the most biased of any commentary I have found). Thing is though, referees rarely give stuff for climbing etc, so it was to be expected. Cheating though, still.

What pisses me off about these world cup referees is how they get all pissy about perfectly fine slide tackles - even ones from the front that get the ball - serbia and montengro even had one sent off for one! Looking at it, I would have probly just given a foul and a warning, since his studs were a bit up but it wasnt intentional and he was going for and got the ball, not the player at all. Then, someone does a flying kick to the face of figo and gets away with it completely - should have been straight red but they don't even get a card. World cup fifa referee guidlines are a load of bollocks.

@ LS, would you think the same way if it hapened in reverse, if one of the T&T players had pulled Rio Ferdinands hair and scored, that it was fair and it was in fact Rio commiting the foul by raising his arm?

i bet the tabloids would have cried "cheat" and had a massive campaign about it.

i don't care to be honest, just interested in the different views on this incident.

i don't agree with the line in the email i received saying that it was overlooked as a way of getting the "big guns" through to the next stage, i think that's bollox.

the moment I saw the goal I saw that building (Crouch) climbing over the guy, and I thought it was a foul, but it didn't help the fact that the T & T player didn't complain even a little bit

If you watch that video, look at peter crouch's head movement, he is tracking the flight of the ball ( had he not then he wouldnt have been able to connect with it at the right time to head it in the direction of the goal, what he doesnt do is look look down to see where the guys dreadlocked pony tail is which suggests he didnt intentionally appear to grab it.

Whats most likely in those situations is for a player to grab some of the oppenents shirt to help him jump up in the air ( it happens quite regulary, if not that then a player usually uses his elbows to aid him jumping ( shearer used to do it quite alot, sometimes you'd foul a player & sometimes not)

However after carefully examining that video footage again, the evidence is pretty damning against Crouch and that goal should'nt have been given.

Not neccesarily, England went a goal down against Germany in 2002 after 6 minutes and went on to win 5-1

Yeah, but we also went 1-0 down to San Marino in a few years earlier, and won 7-1, so that fact doesn't really stand ;-)

Spain went 1-0 down yesterday, and never changed approach until around the hour mark.

Different teams react in different ways. There's many goals have stood that shouldn't, and many more that have been wrongly disallowed. If you've tried reffing a match, you'll know it's stunningly difficult. I had no idea how hard it was until a few years back... I know these guys are supposed to be professionals, but it doesn't matter how good you are - sometimes you miss things.

Being a referee is tough, you have to follow pretty close the plays which means you have to run with the ball, and also position yourself in a way to have a good overall vision. And linesmen are there to help with those things as well, so if they fail it's a problem because they are the ref's references when they can't call something exactly.

But what I meant by opening up is that we are in the World Cup, biggest footy event, and teams must win to classify to the 2nd round. If they suffer a goal they can't stay back and close themselves anymore (especially small teams), they have to at least find a way to tie the game and it's at those times that the bigger, experienced teams must use the spaces in their defense and midfield to work a play for a goal.
