what a finish!!!! timmy cahill for prime minister!!!!

socceroos deserved the win, japan played pretty well but were gifted their goal through some dodgy umpiring but were in all honesty and looking at it completely objectively outplayed. maybe not 3-1 outplayed, but outplayed nonetheless.

bring on brazil...... :)

oh, and the wallabies got up (for once) as well against england last night!

Ah, I'm delighted for the Aussie team! By hook or by crook, whether they should have drawn that match or whatever... their first ever World Cup, and I'm so pleased they got a good start. :) Plus a great match to watch.

Japan were superb in defence until the last 5 minutes, but up front probably the worst team to play so far...

Agree with other posts, Australia is so dirty I couldn´t believe it :|. I hate teams that play like that, and it´s just a shame the Japanese players aren´t really good or decent, except for one or two. Australia was pressing but Japan was surviving, they even had a penalty for them not given by the referee. Japan is just too weak sometimes, I hope they don´t feel like playing too strong against Brazil. I feel sorry for Zico, he does a magnificent job with that horrible team but everything falls apart because the players can´t stand the pressure, especially how they collapsed after the first goal.

Why does everyone forget that Japan's first goal shouldn't have stood anyway. Sort of evens itself out.

It should have stood. gareth southgate and the other commentator guy were being incredibly biased commentating, in favour of australia. The goal was not "controversial" at all imho. If anything, the bloody australian defender blatantly shoved the japanese player with both arms, and also, the goaly elbowed him in the face (though this may have been more accidental).

I think we play it very hard, but the ammount of free kicks given particularly in the first half was more due to the Japanese officials' gamesmanship in trying to influence the referees before the game. I think it worked for them, and good on them for doing it, whatever advantage you can get etc etc.

50/50 calls went against the Aussies, e.g. things that could and probably should have been let go were called but it evened itself out a bit more in the second half.

Of-course these views are from a one-eyed Socceroos supporter!

And this is actually our second World Cup, we played in West Germany in 1972, and went home without scoring a goal, so it's quite nice to get a few!
