He's just had surgery around his brain. He's not about to get up and start dancing. It's standard. He's also in an induced coma apparently. Again, also standard procedure in such cases.

All the best to the guy - he's been damn lucky, and long may it continue.

As a side note, you've got to love TBK. As soon as someone's injured, everyone instantly starts putting a picture of the guy in their avatars and sigs. I'm all for wishing the guy the best, but they're all just a bunch of sheep over there.

Da Matta remains in critical condition

Cristiano da Matta continues to recover from the serious head injury he incurred following a high speed shunt at Road America yesterday.

He remains in the critical care unit of Theda Clark Memorial Hospital in Neenah, Wisconsin, and is being constantly monitored.

Da Matta suffered a subdural hematoma - bleeding between the brain and the skull - to the right side of his head.

The 32-year-old Brazilian struck a deer at a 130mph part of the 4.048-mile course. Skidmarks on the track indicate da Matta saw the deer as he came over the crest of the hill approaching Turn 6, and RuSPORT engineers have revealed he had got down to 90mph but could not avoid the animal, which struck his crash helmet.

The RuSPORT car swerved right and had a side-on impact with the concrete wall just after the bridge, and slid along it, crossing the gravel trap at Turn 6 before relatively gently hitting the tyre wall.

The Champ Car Safety Team were on the scene within 40 seconds and found da Matta unconscious.

Da Matta was not taken to the Champ Car Medical Center but was instead airlifted straight from the scene and taken to Theda Clark.

Close friends and colleagues Bruno Junqueira and Oriol Servia are reported to be at his bedside in intensive care and are expected to be joined by Tony Kanaan and Christian Fittipaldi.

I really hope Cristiano recovers from this, it's always terrible news to hear of any driver receiving serious injuries but he's one of my favourite drivers.

Get well soon.

I really hope that Cristiano recovers...its a sad state of affairs when local fauna decides to end your career for you inadvertantly.

A couple of years ago, at the Bathurst 1000, a kangaroo jumped across the track into the path of Jim Richards(?) and ended his day...mind you, a V8 Supercar has a lot more protection than a ChampCar, but just when you thought the only thing to worry about was morons running down Hangar Straight in the middle of a race, now you have to dodge large animals on the track.

Good luck Cris, get better soon buddy!

Da Matta's family shows gratitude

By Tim Redmayne Monday, August 7th 2006, 10:49 GMT

Cristiano da Matta's family have released a statement thanking everyone for the support they have shown since his accident last Thursday.

Da Matta is in a stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wisconsin, but under heavy sedation.

He was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma, a form of traumatic brain injury, after hitting a deer in testing at Elkhart Lake last week.

The Brazilian was airlifted to hospital where he was operated on, and initial CT scans showed no further bleeding. He does have further swelling, however this is common in such head injuries.

Da Matta's father, mother, two brothers and girlfriend arrived at the hospital on Friday night and have been with him since.

They said in a statement: "We have been fully briefed about Cristiano's condition, and the hospital staff has been providing us with frequent updates.

"We are very happy with the care that Cristiano is receiving here at Theda Clark Medical Center, and we are confident that he is getting the best care possible.

"We will continue to stay here with Cristiano for the foreseeable future, based on his recovery.

"The entire family would like to thank everyone for the tremendous outpouring of support we have received since Cristiano's accident, and continue to receive. Cristiano would appreciate it, and we know it will help him get through his recovery process."

After receiving many messages, anyone wishing to express their support for da Matta is asked to make a donation in his name to Hole in the Wall Camps, an official charity of Champ Car.

Donation information can be found by visiting [www.holeinthewallcamps.org]

LOVELAND, Colo., Aug. 7, 2006, 7:00 pm EDT – The condition of Champ Car World Series driver Cristiano da Matta (#10 RuSPORT Ford-Cosworth / Lola / Bridgestone) continues to improve as he recovers from a serious head injury at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wisc. Da Matta was injured after colliding with a deer that ran onto the track near Turn Six at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc., on Thursday afternoon.

Earlier today, Champ Car Medical Director Dr. Chris Pinderski, who has been very involved in da Matta’s care and recovery process, flew to Wisconsin to monitor the condition of da Matta. He visited da Matta and spoke with da Matta's family and attending physician, Dr. Randall R. Johnson. The following statement is an update on da Matta’s medical status.

"Cristiano continues to make slow but steady progress while in the Intensive Care Unit at Theda Clark Medical Center. At this point in his recovery, Dr. Johnson has begun to decrease Cristiano's sedation. The care Cristiano has been receiving has been excellent and he'll remain in the Intensive Care Unit while his condition and progress are being monitored.”

Further updates on da Matta’s condition will be issued by RuSPORT as they become available.
