black screen first appeared with the later versions of sp2 or sp3,
can't remember exactly.

start gpxpatch, than at black screen alt-tab and close gpxpatch,
gpxpatch will now start correctly every time in that windows
session.

Pretty sure it was SP3. It's a little annoying but easy to deal with.

Its not really a Service Pack issue. Its more a direct X issue, updates of which are contained in the service packs. But if you update Direct X manually the same thing happens.

The problem actually seems to have disappeared on Windows 7, but it doesnt really help as GP3 runs terribly on Windows 7 anyway.

An error I get is it asks me if I want to calibrate the graphics EVERY time I start it... why would this be??? It's annoying, but I can still play the game on full graphics.

Tried replacing the decrypted .exe?
