hello all,

This is the story.
Ive p2-350 -160mb-6gb and replaced the
ati rage pro (which didnt work in hardware mode)
with an gf2mx400-64, In less then a lap, gp3-1.13 stalls
and ive to do a hard reset.
My idea was: videodriver, so i tried the
detonator xp driver from nvidia, as well as the drivers that came
with the card. No improvements so far, any suggestions ?
(always had an apple, i'm a bit of a pc newbie;)

When you say stalls, do you mean the screen just freezes, the computer displays a blue screen or it resets itself?

If the problem only now occurs since you installed the new gfx card, it is 95% certain that it is graphics related.

1) Did you unistall the old drivers correctly - this can cause problems
2) Try calibrating the graphics in GP3
3) Go to start - run - then type "dxdiag" and see if direct x has any
problems with your system
4) Try playing G3 in software mode. If ths works then you know it is a
hardware graphics problem
5) Try different nvidia drivers and install and remove the new/old
ones how nvidia recommend
6) Is this the only game it happens to? if not, maybe the card is faulty

Let me know how you get on.

first of all, thx very much for replying:)

1. as far as my knowledge goes, i think i did install the drivers correctly.
the ones that came with the card had an installwizard, the older of the 2 nvidia drivers that were available for my card overwrote the ones i tried
before so, i'm not sure but it felt good :]

2.tweaked alot with graphic settings and calibrating, sometimes it
freezes(screen and sound) while calibrating.

3. the prob occurs under directx 7 and 8.0a

4.in software, it just works fine(except for picture quality then...

5.as i discribed in point one.

6.this is the only game i own. in fact, i bought a pc so i could play gp3:]

could it be the pc is too slow for this game?

Have you guys done a proper graphics calibration? access this function from the graphics menu, sometimes it's better to do it manually and test. Set the display modes and frame rates to low detail and test. All Nvidia chipped cards will run gp3 and gp3_2k. Try the detonator 3 series from 6.5 up, they are older drivers but these should be ok given your processor speed, these drivers run gp3/gp3_2k, rf, rtcw, moha, bw, on a p2-400. Do not use the xp series drivers unless of course xp is your o/s. If you haven't done so install gpx_patch and run gp3 from it with log functions and assertions turned on and if gp3 has a forced exit , crash or whatever the game will write a log file that displays the cause of the exit for you ;-) Good luck :-)

First off, a P2 is a little slow for GP3 which is very processor dependant compared to most games. The rest of the system is good.

If it runs real slow, you might want to check that your anti-aliasing is OFF because GP3 and FSAA don't mix.

Make sure that your graphics card doesn't share the same IRQ as other hardware. It's OK to share with PCI IRQ steering though.

That's all that comes to mind at the moment. Hope this helps.

right, the fact it works in software means it is almost certain a hardware driver problem and not anything else. Can you describe the type of crash, ie does it give any numbers etc

hi there, first thx all for your suggestions .
i discovered that it also crashes on other games, same type of crash, the screen and sound freezes and ive to do a hard reset.
tried a couple of different drivers, the problem keeps occurring.
ive the feeling that it has to do with the fact that i had to make some 'modifications' to the case of the computer to make the card fit and i cant push the card totally in the agpslot.
it sticks about 1.5 mm out. could this be it?
