Grand Prix 3 in a virtual machine (fixed)

I've recently bought a new notebook (Vista x64).

I've tried to run Grand Prix 3 and Grand Prix 3 2000 season on it but it crashes shortly after starting the application. I think it has something to do with the x64 architecture.

Now I was thinking of installing it in a virtual machine (On windows 98 or windows xp within VMWare or VirtualBox).

Have anyone tried this before? Does it work?

You don't need to do that.
Use gpx_patch. Set CPU to 1. Set verbosity to high.
Set properties of GP3.exe & gpx_patch.exe to Win98 compatibility. Set both to RUN as Administrator.
If you get an error log output, post it or upload it with a link. Test and get back to use. If it's all good, edit topic to show (Fixed). Thanks. :-)

Hmm, I always set only gp3.exe to 98 compability. Maybe that's wrong.

I'll try your suggestion tomorrow!

Still about PCs... My "dear" Sempron 2.6 with 512mb memory and a GeForce 5200 died yesterday... I'm going to get another PC (at least, I want to...) and would like to get any suggestions to run GP3 AND Belini tracks without any problems...

With this configs, I had few slowdowns in dry races, but got over 150% PO in wet races... Belini hinted about GeForce 7 series and heard about not getting a PC with Intel chipsets, Windows Vista and/or DirectX 10...

Suggestions?

if you want GP3 2K, avoid Vista. otherwise, a strong dual core processor (quads are slower for GP3 for whatever reason) and any decent graphics card should do these days (Nvidia tend to have more driver issues than Ati ones-pink lines around tyres etc. easily fixable, just annoying!)

for reference, my main machine is:
Core2Quad, Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
3GB RAM
GeForce 8500 GS

stock GP3 runs well enough-80% in the wet @ the max resolution (in 22nd place). GP3 2000 stock runs nice too, just GPxPatch won't work on Vista with GP3-2K for whatever reason(it's fine for 1.13)

You don't have to avoid Vista. GP3 &2k can and does run on Vista. ;-)

I've been having some similar problems recently. Could you please advise about how to run both as Administrator. Thanks.

Right click the exe, set in the properties.

Sorry - I can't see anything about administrator in the properties when I right-click - just compatibility. When I make gpx_patch win 98 compatible it won't work properly and starts the game up with the original tracks, intro etc. Thanks for your advice anyway.

You say "stock" GP3... Stock GP3 tracks (and similars) are too light compared to Belini's tracks (which requires at least a 2.4 GHz CPU...

intel are fine, I have an E8400 dual core 3ghz and nvidia 7900gtx max PO in the wet 30%
suggest you have at least 1gb of memory and remember to turn off vertical sync as it
drops the PO in the wet by 50%

the problem with gp32k is directx 10 graphic cards, I messed for over a week trying to
get my nvidia 9600gt to work with gp32k and had no luck, endned up selling at buying the
7900gtx

if anyones found a fix for gp3/2k and directx 10 graphic cards, please post.

Forgive me for my noobness, but how I disable Vertical Sync? (what the hell is that...?! Never heard about it on GP3...)

@ Belini, i tried it with my X1950Pro as well i seem to remember and encountered a similar issue. I'll give it another go and compare.

@Erick... My only experience with Belini tracks has been the ones converted for GP3 1.13, and i found no performance loss on my system at the time (E6300 @ 1.86GHz, Ati X1950 Pro, 2 Gb Ram...)

Vertical Sync-i believe this is in the 3D settings in the Nvidia control panel-it's in the global settings page of the Manage 3D settings tab

You got 30% PO in wet race with YOUR TRACKS? If yes, seems that I got my new PC configuration!!

well sort of:) it all depends on the mods, belini visors and visor effects adds to the PO

just did a couple of tests from the back of the grid in the wet with belini tracks and visors
spa: grid hi 42, start/first corner 79, stabalizes lo 18 hi 54
imola: grid hi 43, start/first corner 71, stabalizes lo 14 hi 48
monaco: grid hi 45, start/first corner 89, stabalizes lo 12 hi 39

Seems that it's OK for me... As I don't use to RACE (only practice sessions, now with CCs around to have a time to beat...

It would be interesting if there were a "lighter" version of visors and related... I mean LIGHTER as using fewer GPxCInfo panels as it uses to... (I had 4 slots used: the logo at bottom screen and three for 2006 TV-style HUD)

Gonna try something as soon as I get my new PC... (hope it happens before my birthday at April 21...) Better: I hope it happens when I am still ALIVE!!

Well, I'm still in doubt about video cards... It's suggested to avoid DirectX 10, so I shouldn't get a GeForce 8 or later, as they supports DX10... It's possible to use those cards with DX9 drivers?

If not, I'm finishing with THIS machine:

- AMD Athlon 64 x2 3GHz
- GeForce 7 series (here in Brazil, most found is 7200...)
- 2GB RAM

Any more suggestions?

increasing RAM by 1 more gig won't hurt you, especially with GPx games
