Making Engine Sounds

I would like to make some new engine sounds. What editor do people use to make and save the sound. I have tried using AUDACITY but the file won't play in the game. Any suggestions?

I use Nero Wave Editor (came with my Nero burn programme) and it works fine for me. You can save sounds in various formats and bit rates...
