Round 15 : Luxembourg - Nurburgring

Qualifying

After the misery of Austria a good qualifying session in which i took pole by half a second and could have gone even faster but ran out of fuel coming back to the pits and sat out the rest of the session.

Race

Got a great start and led into turn one whilst behind me Mika and Fisichella got together and both crashed out of the race. I managed to pull away from Frentzen whilst to my good fortune Schumacher developed an Electrical problem and had to make an early pitstop.

I led until the first pitstop when i came out in 3rd and enjoyed a nice battle with Irvine before he pitted. I then managed to pull away and easily win the race with Michael making it back up to 3rd with the help of a dodgy engine blow up for Irvine. Jean Todt been pressing his buttons again? :P.

Championship Standings

I now have a 7 point lead over Schumacher going into the penultimate race at Suzuka which i will try and film using Fraps though it proved problematic when i tried to do it for Austria.

Silly Season

Mclaren have re-signed both drivers for 1998 ending speculation that world championship leader Andrew Jones may leave the woking team for Williams.

1998

Having chosen to stay at McLaren for another year hopes are high at repeating 1997's success.

Round One : Australia - Melbourne

The Season starts as always at Albert Park, Melbourne, home of the Australian Grand Prix.

Qualifying

In Qualifying it was clear from the off that Michael Schumacher was the man to beat, and he took pole position with his first time of the session. Mika Hakkinen joined him on the front row albeit half a second behind the German.

Meanwhile I was struggling. Despite finding the Melbourne circuit a pleasure to drive it has never been one i was particularly fast at, qualifying 9th last season and 4th in 1996. I could match Schumacher in the 1st sector, but was hemoridging time in the 2nd sector, even though it only had 2 corners in it. After being 12th for most of the session, in the last seconds i managed to take 3rd, nearly a second behind Schumacher.

Race

I got past Hakkinen at the first corner, but a quick starting Jacques Villeneuve got past both of us. Schumacher started to pull away at an alarming rate whilst i busied myself with getting past Jacques. Just as i got past him his engine blew and he was out of the race. But try as i might i couldnt get anywhere near Michaels pace.

As the first round of pitstops came close, Hakkinen was only a couple of seconds behind me as i struggled with understeer. When i pitted Hakkinen continued on a one stopper along with Irvine. Worse still Schumacher despite his pace was also on a one stopper. Leaving my pace questionable. When i made my 2nd stop i came out 30 seconds behind Irvine, and in pushing to catch him went off which allowed Schumacher to lap me and put Wurz on my tail. I was able to pick up my pace again and pull away from Wurz to secure 4th, but after the highs of 97, the first race of 98 had brought me right back down to earth.

Thankfully its Interlagos next, where i lapped the field last season so hopefully things will be better.

Race

Got a good start, as did Ralf Schumacher and the two Ferrari's who all passed Hakkinen. I was able to pull away whilst Ralf and Mika passed the one stopping Ferrari's and had a 15 second lead going into the first round of pitstops. The same pattern followed to my 2nd stop. I came out behind Mika who made his 2nd stop 10 laps later. When he came out he was 35 seconds behind.

Then as usual i lost concentration and spun, which cut my lead down to just 15 seconds. Mika on much fresher tyres was set the fastest lap of the race and began to close at the rate of a second a lap. I tried to counter but the car was starting to slide on worn tyres and Mika caught me with 2 laps to go...

Round Three : Argentina - Buenos Aires

Qualifying

Despite my dislike for the circuit i found a groove around the circuit and was able to take pole just ahead of Hakkinen.

Race

I got a good start and led into turn one ahead of Hakkinen. I hen built up a gap of around 2 seconds which i managed to maintain until i started to hit traffic, i managed to get through the traffic better than Hakkinen and had a 7 second lead before my first stop. I came out in 2nd place with Michael already retired. I maintained the gap to Hakkinen to pitted several laps later.
Back in the lead Hakkinen began to eat into my advantage but just as he got close my engine expired and put me out of the race. Hakkinen cruised on to win by a lap.

Could have taken pole position but kept running wide at Piratella, and on my last lap got held up in traffic so ended up with only my banker lap counting. 3rd on the grid.

Race

Got a good start and passed Schumacher before turn one. Dropped him quickly and caught Hakkinen after 10 laps and passed him into the final chicane.

All three of us made our first stops together and came out in 5th, passed Fisichella and about to catch and pass Herbert when Transmission failed and put me out of the race.

A circuit i love to drive on. I dominated here last season in the rain and this season qualified on pole by 1.2 seconds ahead of Mika. Bring on the race.

Race

I went aggressive on strategy so to have the best chance of getting off the line first, making a 2 stop with a short 1st stint.

I did indeed get off the line first and held off Mika for a few laps before getting my rhythm and pulling away comfortabley, so much so that when i came in for my first stop i came out just behind Mika whom i quickly caught as he was having some trouble with backmarkers and soon passed him as he was slow coming out of the chicane behind 2 Jordans (see video).

I then once again pulled away about 10 seconds before Mika made his one and only stop. I responded by putting in the fastest lap of the race before making my 2nd stop a little early in response. Coming out of the pits with a comfortable lead i cruised the last half of the race.

Round Seven: Canada - Montreal

Qualifying

Started the session very slow. Made changes to the Brake balance and found a way of sliding the car into the corners and took pole by 4 hundredths of a second.

Instead of backing out I think you should have "forced" the issue with Irvine at the chicane. Sure, you might have end up losing part of your wing but he'd have flipped over and barril rolled down the straight and possibly have cars behind collect him :P (yes, perhaps I do speak from experience)

I still would have retired, so it doesn't really matter does it. :).

But either way I always try not to punt people off, its easy to do, but I prefer the battle to the easy push off the track.

Qualifying

Spent my first three runs going backwards coming out of chicanes, so played it safe with my final run and ended up 2nd.

Race

Race started with the track wet, but no rain forecast for the first hour of the race. Never the less i started on Intermediates whilst the rest of the field started on Dry tyres.

I got a good start and led into turn one and started to pull away at over a second a lap from Schumacher who had passed Herbert at the start. I had built a gap of around 20 seconds when suddenly Schumacher started to eat into my gap at over 2 seconds a lap.

Trying to hold him off until a sensible pit window i pushed as hard as my Intermediates would allow but it was not enough and i pitted for dries. Coming out in 4th place i pushed on passing the rest as they made their first stops.

After Schumachers stop he came out right in front of me, and was horrifically slow and i made easy meat of him and he fell back and was being challenged by Herbert and the rest within a couple of laps. Then it started to rain again and as i was forced to stop for wets, it became clear that Schumacher had taken on wets during his first stop.

Knowing Schumacher would have to stop again for fuel i filled the car at my tyre stop, coming out 10 seconds behind the German. But with a heavy car i was unable to keep up and was soon over 30 seconds behind and Schumacher easily kept the lead upon his pit stop.

Once he came out he was still alot quicker, and worse still so was Herbert, my tyres obviously passed their best i made a final stop for a new set of wets coming out in 2nd and was able to cruise to the finish. Unfortunately Herbert retired with a Puncture 10 laps from the end.

Some nice racing in the video, but I think you're a bit too agressive whilst fighting others (for example the Diniz accident, overtaking M Schumacher,...) It does not only cost those others, but your race is compromised as well. Just stay calm whilst wanting to overtake :)
