Disappearing Steering Wheel

When I am playing the game I turn off some of the detail to get a good frame rate, 26 fps or something like it.
Whenever I play and am accellerating especially, the steering wheel disappears, or part of it does. It's a pain when you are trying to see your split times etc, why does it do this and how do I stop it?
My graphics card aint too hot, Nvidia TNT 16Mb RAM (Think) and I play in hardware mode. Is it to do with the virtual cockpit, I can't seem to turn that off.
As you probably gathered I don't like reading manuals!
