Trying to run GP3 on Windows 11

Hi, I am posting this for a friend:

"I've tried this but for some reason, I kept getting a direct draw not installed message (it was). Once I used the 2024 update to dgvoodoo2, it did load but the hardware mode in game only loads the cockpit image, every other bit of rendering is broken (mirrors sometimes show lines, rest of image is gray). Do you have any clue how to get this to work? I'm on a 64-bit installation of W11."

Can anyone give a clue on how to help him?

You have to install the 2.52 dgvoodoo .
that's the last working well in GP3.

I suggest to use:
VRAM 512
Resolution Unforced.
Bilinear + linear filter on .
Antialiasing Auto
Foce VSync
fast memory access

Did the game complain that direct draw was not installed for you?

my only suspect could be Windows has not installed the own directX (like a windows in a virtual machine, without hardware acceleration or video GPU drivers not properly installed) , or version is not compatible. I may find it if you go in the option of dgvoodoo config panel, in the General -> Rendering -> API Output , try to see if there is DirectX 11 (feature level 10.1) .
Anyway open start menu type dxdiag and enter...

which CPU and GPU you have on it ?

if it is a laptop , that means it has two graphic card. and highly possible it is using by default the UHD Graphic by default for the game on dgvoodoo.
Be sure it has the drivers installed and active of which GPU is using. I think it should be possible to configure which application uses which graphic card, but you should play with it cause actually the app could be GP3 or DgVoodoo or both, don't know.
Alternatively, you may try to use dxWnd as another wrapper like dgVoodoo, it usually have more options to configure better.

I tell u what.
If that isn't working , try this:
download this zip file
[drive.google.com]

then extract all files in your folder of GP3.

Open the file .dxw with a notepad and modify whenever in rows 4 and 5 with the correct path of your game folder.
Save the file closing.

Try to start the game by that

@pippozzo my friend came with some updates on his situation with the game. Here's how it looks now:

And if that is with dxWnd you cannot do too much more.
that is because is using intel card, and intel cards made black as transparent, instead of its color key. Not sure if it s sorted with,
but there was a log with this , have a look.

[sourceforge.net]

in fact if you go in graphics options you should see graphic card as the intel UHD one selected (not nvida).
You should find a mode to run the game using forced the Nvida one.

Otherwise, if you use dgvoodoo you should be fine, but make sure there are drivers installed of the card you are using.

Make also sure to set the exacutable gp3.exe as compatible mode "Windows xp SP2/SP3" or Windows 7 .

try also then these dgvoodoo files configured. you need to unzip files in the folder of the game (mind NO dxwnd files must be there, it's alternative to).

Thanks mate, it finally worked for him! I never had to do such things and in my VM the game runs flawlessly with dgvoodoo and dxwnd. I am not sure why he struggled tho

Now he just wants one tiny detail... widescreen lmao

NVM his screen is too big for that. He settled in a 4:3 and is happy now
