No, I don't have another hard drive. Still useful upgrade.by MarcLister - Off-Topic
Cheers Tux. I was planning to do that anyway. If I can rescue music I will be very happy. If I can get it to work and rescue music, I'll give it to my brother. He only has a 30Gb HDD and I've said he may as well have my old 120 so that the 30gig disk can be for Windows and program files with the 120 being for his games.by MarcLister - Off-Topic
No, not fixed. Cat's 4.4 were not the problem. I think it is HDD. Last night, listening to music via WMP9 then machine froze. Couldn't CTRL+ALT+DEL as keyboard did not respond. Pressed restart button, then interestingly my HDD could not be found. Startup went fine until it got to detecting drives and stopped. I looked inside PC, nothing wrong, tried again, worked. @ Ross111R Remember your black winter testing livery for the BAR? You emailed it to me, but I couldn't get it to work. Could you tell me whose shape it is meant to fit on? Don't have another PC to use. I leave my brother's alone, he gets withdrawal symptoms if I even mention using his computer just for 5 minutes! Tux how long 'till you qualify as an engineer, just out of interest? And whereabouts are you in the world? Glad to say that AV test completed fine, now I am running Cats 4.3. I left the machine for 45-50 minutes, and normally within thaby MarcLister - Off-Topic
Looking good so far since removing 4.4's. I'm going to watch some TV now, will leave PC running a AV test. See if that causes any problems.by MarcLister - Off-Topic
How come? My brother has a Thermaltake. It looks good. What is the problem with Thermaltake? I've seen good reviews for them.by MarcLister - Off-Topic
Bazza. Sorry for the late reply. Just as I got your first message, my PC conked out. I failed to see the funny/ironic side and had lunch. Firstly, I checked out all molexes and all seems OK, AGP and PCI cards are seated. Surge protector is fine, sometimes my desk lamp is on which uses same surge unit as PC, no problem there. Power connections are OK. Ram is Corsair 3200/400Mhz 2x512Mbby MarcLister - Off-Topic

Nice. MS have just gone up in my books (not literally!), but still behind ATI/Hercules occupying joint 1st for the 9800XT!! Marcby MarcLister - Off-Topic
OK. Well HDD check done - no problems. So even if I changed CPU and HDD, if I rang MS's Activation line they would what clear the activation history or something? Sounds good. Could save me £160-odd. Atm I'm getting voltages from Asus Probe. If I ever check the CPU temp in BIOS, CPU temp is a little high for the cooling I have. Roughly 10oC above temp measured using Asus Probe.by MarcLister - Off-Topic
Hmm - I would go for the PSU being suspect - even though it is 550W. Maybe it just isn't good enough. I will order the new one tomorrow, and even if it doesn't solve the problem, which btw I think is unlikely, at least it removes the possibility of it being a problem later on. Tbh I've been thinking of getting a 400Mhz FSB cpu for the performance boost over a 333Mhz FSB (if thby MarcLister - Off-Topic
Test what exactly? I don't, not with Windows XP on anyhow? Are you thinking that there is summat up (or down!) with my HDD? I can run a test on it overnight, hardly ever do because it takes ruddy ages! I have been thinking about getting a big 250 gig odd HDD with 8Mb cache and 7200RPM before I go to Uni. I've got a 120 gig 2Mb 5400 at the mo. I want to upgrade as thinks are gettinby MarcLister - Off-Topic
I left my PC defragging both C: and D: earlier on today using Norton Speed Disk, came back later, machine had powered down! Same symptoms as before. Strange, eh? Btw, checked my PSU and it is a 550W. I suppose as it is a crap Q-Tec, that it actually doesn't give out 550W, but something a little lower and so when my 9800XT powers up, sooner or later the whole PC crashes? ROFLMAO Tux. Have you seen the new MS ads? Microsoft - Imagine the possibilities. Imagine the new Beethoven, it seems. Marcby MarcLister - Off-Topic
I'm not planning on getting a new CPU, but the fan for my heatsink has to be screwed in. Atm I can't get the fan to cover the heatsink 100%, about 5% can't be covered as the PSU gets in the way. The fan uses the PCI screw holes, and I think my 9800XT isn't screwed in properly because the screw has to go through the fan bracket and the gfx card bracket. Is it easy to removeby MarcLister - Off-Topic
Not yet. Been checking prices of PSU's, CPU heatsinks and Thermaltake cases. I can get a CWT (re-branded Antec) 550W, a Zalman CNPS 7000Al-Cu and a Thermaltake V2000+ Xaser III for £170! What do you think to that? I think the new PSU would sort out my PC power down prob, but the CPU heatsink and the new case would keep my whole system that little bit cooler. I've checked some PC foby MarcLister - Off-Topic

Gav - thanks. I just found the site that said that the heatsink I have won't work with Thermaltake - it was Overclock. I have the CNPS6000. The fan is separate to the heatsink - this is the problem with using it in a Thermaltake, however the new Zalman CNPS7000A doesn't have this problem. Cheers Gav et al who have helped me no end. Also, my post count has jumped from 22 to 38 in onby MarcLister - Off-Topic
Cheers Gav. I remember reading something about Zalman and Thermaltake compatiblity, but I can't remember what it said! Google to the rescue then! Also, checked sites I know and couldn't find CWT anywhere, so will order the CWT 550W model. Marcby MarcLister - Off-Topic
Thanks Gav. Prices do look good! You may have saved me £40 odd! Any idea on fitting a Zalman heatsink into a Thermaltake? Marcby MarcLister - Off-Topic
