I'm a bit late into this tread....sorry But anyway this physics disscussion is not flogging a dead horse. It's interesting. This forum is partly for people to muse over roughly GP4 related things isn't it. For me the "feel" of the car is the most important issue with a race sim. The previous posts have been very interesting (it's nice to see a forum where it doesby pannini - Grand Prix 4
Trev, Thanks for the reply. I suppose i just wanted some reassurance. I agree with some that there is still further territory for Geoff to explore as far as the physics are concerned, but i think you are absolutely right about the feel. The thing I prize most in race sims is feel. Even though i'm sat in my office type chair in my study in front of a monitor, somehow i can feel the car undby pannini - Grand Prix 4
Trev, If you read this I'm interested in your opinion. There seems to be some controversy/criticism of the physics model in GP4. In particular how do you feel this compares to F1 2002. Some say the EA game has more complicated modelling, but in your reviews in PC Gamer I seem to remember you suggesting F1 2002 had a more arcade feel. When I played F1 2001 i just could'nt feel the carby pannini - Grand Prix 4
thats a really good point 111s it souldn't be that difficult to incorporate you could have some teams sandbagging like real F1by pannini - Grand Prix 4
Q1) i thought the answer was 42. (but what's the question)by pannini - Grand Prix 4
I remeber driving with keys in REVS and after lots of practice it became quite natural. would'nt dream of driving GP4 on keys now though. Full races were 20 laps, just about my concentration limit.by pannini - Grand Prix 4
"Wasn't Revs the one which was on the old BBC Micro????" Yup it came out on BBC first and then C64by pannini - Grand Prix 4
I agree that GPL is superb. But the thing is that those cars had no downforce and skinny tyres. the effect of throttle on car attitude is pronounced. i suspect (but don't know) that the GP4 physics are pretty good but it's difficult to compare to GPL. If i had to bet on it i'd say the car physics modelling in GPL is probably the most advanced ever. I guess papyrus are US based anby pannini - Grand Prix 4
Joao, GP4 is a great game that just needs a good patch. By the way i had a bet on Portugal to win the World Cup What happened to your guys! i'm dissapointed.by pannini - Grand Prix 4
stunt car was great. i wish geoff whould make the sequel. the car physics felt real and yet at the same time way over the top. REVS was the birth of realistic race sims in my view, although papyrus first sim (i think) indy500 was also an important breakthrough (it was after REVS though)by pannini - Grand Prix 4
yeah, the thing is that with GP4 and previous GP's the physics seem to let you know where the limit is. because of that you can drive a full race and you can let up and play safe/conserve tyres of if need be push like hell and the difference in lap time is only a couple of seconds. with the ea games i was always quessing where the limit was. basically i just felt detatched. Ok, the way loosing a front wing has been modelled may not be realistic, but that doesn't mean the physics are arcadey. I just think that you can "feel" the grip in GP games where you can't in EA F1 games. I find you have to fiddle with the controller options quite a lot to get that feel though.by pannini - Grand Prix 4
I mostly agree with you Tim. As i've said somewhere else, problems with new software is a consequence of the nature of PC's. However it's a matter of degree. There is a certain amount of glitches you can put up with, but from what i read on this forum, infogrames have not been thorough enough. Personally i've had worse problems with other games. But Tim's right, lets geby pannini - Grand Prix 4
GPL is a superb game. I wouldn't even consider trying to drive it without an analogue wheel though. using keys must be like trying to balance a biro on its nib. Also the lotus is fastest but also quite unstable. try the brabham or ferrari, they are a little easier. (fantastic engine note on the ferrari btw)by pannini - Grand Prix 4
does TC toggle between off, low and high matthewp? i'll try that. it would be nice to set it on low but i haven't noticed that feature in the game.by pannini - Grand Prix 4
if you're still there vader, goodnight, bedtime for me....by pannini - Grand Prix 4
i'm too gulible for these type of conversations btw what other sims do you invest time in. i seem to buy loads (eg the EA one's) drive them a couple of times then go back to GP3 / 4by pannini - Grand Prix 4
ok stick to this one then, btw, FIA super licence are you pulling my legby pannini - Grand Prix 4
wow you've got a seriously good memory/knowledge about race sims. i think the GPS was done nicely in GP4. ubisoft's F1 racing had GPS, but when the car feel/physics were so poor (my opinion only) the GPS just seemed a waste of effort.by pannini - Grand Prix 4
yup i'm totally on your wavelength vader. to be honest i feel guilty for criticising when i think of the countless hours of fun geoff crammond games have given me. in it's day REVS (on acorn BBC/ C64 - yes i am getting old) was a quantam leap for computer game car physics. part of the fun is looking forward to what they'll do in the next version. how many years before decent VR gby pannini - Grand Prix 4
did cart precision racing really have GPS? i remember playing that game and thought the feel of the cars was a bit numb. i'd like to see papyrus do a new cart game instead of churning out nascar games. i've got a lot of respect for their car physics.by pannini - Grand Prix 4
nicely explained vader. i don't think geoff should have undue criticism for the way they've done TC in GP4, but there's room for tweaking/improvement for GP5.by pannini - Grand Prix 4
actually that sky commentator/pundit line-up sounds quite good. (who's perry macarthy though). Peter windsor's quite switched on from what i read in F1 racing mag. I must admit ITV have done a much better job than i thought when BBC got ditched. Brundle's a real asset but murray's replacement, james allen, hmmmmm. He's enthusiastic but somehow he just doesn't seeby pannini - Grand Prix 4

What would you consider being enough new content for the newest GP to be worthy of GP4 instead of GP3.5 or whatever? There were similar comments when GP3 came out (ie GP2.5). Look, i'm happy with GP4, i feel i've got my money's worth from the GPS tracks and the new graphics engine. Also pleased with the pit crew. I think there's more new content between GP3 - 4 than there seby pannini - Grand Prix 4
Firstly give Trevor a break. He reviewing the game according to his own preferences and tastes (as does any critic be it video games, films or restaurants). Eg some say the physics are better in F1 2002, i don't agree but i suspect it's down to peronal subjectivity (how many of us have driven an F1 car). i've played GP4 a reasonable amount and agree fully with trevs review. itby pannini - Grand Prix 4
I love F1 but £12 for one race is just too much. although i will try it one day just to see what it's like. at the moment ferrari is winning everything and it depresses me (i dislike schumi and ferrari to an almost childish degree) and i can't bear to spend £12 just to feel dissapointed again. i suppose the upside of sky is i can watch the teams/drivers i want instead. i'll stickby pannini - Grand Prix 4
yeah i agree Neil it would be nice to be able to soften the TC (i think they can do it in car in real F1). to be honest i think the implementation of TC in GP4 is OK but not perfect. launch control seems ok too. someone said launch control in F1 2002 is better but i don't have that.by pannini - Grand Prix 4
what about the price for one race?by pannini - Grand Prix 4
Not too sure about TC. From the way that the designers have implemented it, it seems designed to be used, and it also helps laptimes (unlike throttle help in GP3). I agree with morbid from other threads though that it masks driving errors and disguises what the car is really doing if you are making a setup. Still, it's the same in real F1 I suppose. Maybe a compromise is to practice and deby pannini - Grand Prix 4
