Here is the topic dedicated to GPL Rank discussion (how surprising :P)

nice :) I seem to be like you Esben : I'd rather improve my Monster than the GPL Rank :)

But I've just switched to '65, only for trying, and I'm only hlaf a second off the benchmark at Monza after 3 laps only in the BRM :o

The BRM is actually the fastest car in '65 :P

I've still yet to crack the '65 rank. Some of the tracks are actually pretty tricky (the Glen springs to mind).

Still, good work with your Silvy time Briere.

Gave up with the 65s. I just don't like driving them. Really looking forward to the 69s though, best of both worlds :D

I've not got a monster rank yet, but I've got some sort of time on most tracks, 3 yr old some of them though :P

Gonna go and get some more times towards a monster rank now :)

The '65s are good to race though, even if they are boring to drive on your own. I don't think I've actually had a boring race in the 65s come to think of it, and some stunning battles with Matt at Silverstone with do or die moves all over the place for the last 3 laps :D

Haven't driven the 65s for ages simply because I dont bother unless i'm gonna be racing them. Close after it's release you could even go into a pickup race and almost be gaurenteed a superb battle, but this late after you need a league for it. In the short time I worked on a 65 rank managed a -3.7 which has stood for ages. As has my GPLrank.

Monsters are fun/good as you get to know all the different chassis. Plus the skills learnt in the lower chassis will rub off on your quicker chassis, and therefore increasing your skills! There's also nothing like passing a Lotus in a BRM/Honda ;)

well done mate, although how you can keep up with me and Gav pretty consistantly in the same chassis but be 20s behind in GPLrank always bewilders me :)

In one sense, it's hard to imagine going quite that fast, but when you reach the next step, you look back and wonder why you felt it was so hard.

I went through a spell at around -45 where I was putting a huge effort into going faster, taking about an hours preperation before I even went onto the track.

When you get going though, the times just drip away, and before you know it you'll be under 8 minutes at the ring, which is a real confidence booster.

Does anyone have any advice for kylami? It's slippyness is frustratingly annoying.

the thing about Kyalami, I think, is getting it right :)

apparetnly, it's the hardest benchmark to break :o
Re: GPL Rank discussion

Kyalami - don't attack the braking zones too aggressively. It's all rhythm and smooth.

Turn 2: brake early, as it's off-camber and downhill. Take it easy, it's a tricky one.

Turn 3, take a bit of grass on the inside, and try not to run too wide, although you can usually get away with putting a couple of wheels on the grass, its not worth it when you're learning.

Turn 4, run ever so slightly wide on the way in, but don't attack it - keep the car neutral (just enough throttle to keep the speed stable) until you reach the apex, then thottle hard.

Brake easy and neat for the 90degree left hand hairpin thing (haven't made my mind up what it is) keep it tight on the inside, until you're nearly out of the corner, don't poodle around the outside scrabbling for grip, it doesn't work at such low speed.

Neat and tidy for the chicane, don't try to overdrive it.

Final corner, turn in late, clipping the apex about 2/3 of the way through the corner, by which time you should be on the throttle until you get to turn 1 :)

Kyalami is the track that taught me how all important the racing line is. I tried a few laps not pushing at all but sticking exactly to the line and was actually faster than my PB at the time. Just try that, make sure you don't go too deep into corners like 2 and 5, thats where some people lose loads of time.

How the buggery you do that, I'll never know. Spa is my bogy track I think, I just can't get a decent lap at all round there.

Yeah, I'm not too hot around Spa myself, took a gargantuan effort to get to where I am at the moment - Rouen is another track I'm struggling at, somehow... I used to be really fast there - if there's one weak area I'm especially weak in, it's long fast corners.

Anyway, getting towards a Monster Rank now :)

Update time: Kyalami 1967, Brabham time 1:19.864 -0.974
New time: Kyalami 1967, Eagle time 1:19.728

Update time: Monza 1967, Cooper time 1:30.636 -0.540
New time: Mosport Park 1967, BRM time 1:24.096
Update time: Silverstone Circuit 1967, Cooper time 1:28.068 -9.950

Hmm thanks for trying to help.

My best time seems to be a pitiful 1:25.33 :O Apparently, my best splits make a 1:23.91 or something but that's irrellevant.

Worse news however is that I seems to be getting worse, not better, with laps usually being around 1:27 and I can't seem to see where the problem is :D I don't seem to have a good 'feel' for the circuit. If I try to be more smooth it usually means my acceleration/braking is slower, which either results in a slower time or me going off :D I think possiblly I am losing quite a bit on the first corner, however if I brake later there, it seems almost a lottery as to whether I will slide off or not :D Being subtle with me analogue stick controller is far from easy - god knows how keyboard people do this track. I am using the default setup (with adjusted fuel) but I don't think that is the main problem, more just that I am too crap :D.

If anyone is willing to help I can have a go at uploading some replays to show you my crapness. Dunno whether it will be of any use though?

Cheers, Daniel
