Hi y'all

for part of my 4th year of my degree (one more to go after this - can't finish soon enough!) we have to do a group project as a vehicle design. we're currently at the 'throw ideas into the ring' stage, and so i'm gonna throw the question out to you guys - what would you design?

basically, we're not allowed to do anything mass market (no fiesta challengers for example), but other than that (and bikes) pretty much anything goes. So, over to you lot!

(we do have a couple of ideas which we're pursuing (i won't put em here for now) - just in case you all thought i'm being lazy!)

What kind of project are you looking at? Is it a design study type of thing? Specifics on what the final destination will be / requirements beyond not mass market would be nice.

But,

Take a page out of the Panoz book.

Front engined LMP Car. No one else will think of that one, I assure you. Unless it has to be for a street use vehicle, in which case, do a crazy road version.

I'm gonna assume you live across the pond, in which case some sort of 60's American Muscle Britted up, or..... How about something that looks like the BAMF cousin of a old Lotus Elan?

The Flanker is gone. :(

A 3-wheeler... and trying to get across a green image. So a 3 wheeler with a low Cd design?

I take it everything will be looked at, so you'd be expected to have a working model or something?

Create some sort of Caterham 7 with wings. Drop a 1.5 liter turbo engine in it for the power and get a KERS system in it for greenness :D

An Urban single person vehicle. One that can be used by anyone in inner city areas; available for hire like a taxi. Try something different like where you stand (or lean against a seat like at a bus stop) for the cabin that way entry and egress could be simplyfied by stepping in out of the vehicle. It will also make them more stackable for storage when not in use.

Naboo's pretty much got it right, the success of the original mini and beetle is that they were reliable, efficient, and cheap, and when they DID break down, they weren't hard to repair. You'd want to take those attributes into consideration and design a car that has 4 seats to make it practical and be able appealing to a wider variety of people than a single seat car would.

Well not really because that is based on a recumbent cycle design and is not a smart desgin from a point of view of covering a large demographic (could you imagine the trouble a pentioner would have getting in and out?)

But saying that I am looking to buy a C5 and convert it to run on Lithium Ion batteries with an uprated drive system and be capable of doing at least 60mph for the commute to work ;) Just need to look into the posibilities of an SVA on such a machine :)

just to inform, we pitched the idea of an alternatively powered trackday car (ie an atom with a motor or equivalent), but the tutors hated it. so we've been forced down the 'sustainable' route, so we're now doing a 'sustainable' trackday car, for which i'm doing all the body stuff! (bamboo ftw!)
